"I’ve worked with Cedar Coast Construction before on smaller projects like accent walls and custom woodwork, and they’ve always impressed me. But when a flood severely damaged my home, they truly exceeded my expectations. Jeff and his team managed the entire restoration with exceptional skill, handling everything from flooring and kitchen renovations to bathroom, including areas of my garage walls areas. Their attention to detail and transformed my home into something even better than before. Their communication was flawless, keeping me informed every step of the way. The team was professional, punctual, and left my space spotless. Cedar Coast Construction isn’t just a contractor—they’re problem solvers and dream makers. I couldn’t be happier with their work and highly recommend them. Call them today—401-464-1891!"

"Claudio (the owner) is everything I wanted in a contractor - knowledgeable, qualified, reasonable, trustworthy, easy to work with, and cares about the quality of his work. I am very happy with the work and I am someone who cares about the details. I would hire them again without question and plan to for future projects. Claudio and his team removed an internal wall that was covered in built in book shelves to reconnect two rooms as originally intended when the house was built, redesigned around a fireplace, installed a wall, closed off a doorway and built a hall closet as part of the project, which also include electrical work, removing some floor brickwork and replacing it with wood to match the existing floor, which he did perfectly, and painting. Separately Claudioâ s team has also replaced and updated internal waterlines and external hose connections, replaced a bathroom vanity, sub-flooring, wallboard, and tile work."

Woodworking questions, answered by experts

Most contractors do not charge for meetings, but it can depend on the project, mainly if it includes detailed consultations or project planning. For general estimates, homeowners shouldn't expect to be charged. Always ask up front about meeting fees to avoid surprises and ensure you know what’s included in the process.

If you don’t have a power saw with a blade where you can adjust the angle, you could use a miter box and hand saw to make the cuts. The miter box contains wide slots to support the piece of baseboard and other narrow slots to accommodate the blade of the hand saw. However, it’s tough to make non-standard cuts beyond 30 or 45 degrees when using a miter box.

Yes, ceiling joists are typically load-bearing. However, their primary function is to support the weight of the ceiling and loads applied to it, like lighting fixtures and ceiling fans. They can also help support the roof, especially if they’re part of truss systems. Remember, the load-bearing capacity of ceiling joists depends on the material, size, and space between them.

Joists do distribute their load to beams, but they don’t sit on top of the beams. Instead, home builders nail or screw the joists directly to the beams such that the end of the joist butts up against the edge of the beam. Beams can sit on other beams for support, but you’ll never see a joist sitting on top of a beam or another joist.

Whether or not it’s easier to cut wood when it’s wet versus dry depends largely on the type of tool you use and the wood you’re cutting. For example, a chain saw should still be able to cut through wet wood with relative ease, but it may be more difficult to maneuver due to the wood fibers sticking to the chains of the saw.

However, you might want to avoid cutting wood entirely when it’s wet if you’re pruning your tree. Sawing a wet tree that you don’t plan on removing can also encourage bacterial and fungal growth and decay.
