It turns out that every time it rained, the water under the patio was never draining away correctly. Since my wife and I were not confident determining which plants would be appropriate, Joe took that responsibility and made sure that what we had would add a variety of color, be resistant to animals nibbling, and would thrive based on where they were positioned in the yard.
