"Dan and Dave did a great job. They prepped the area by removing old vinyl flooring and laminate backsplash and patched the wall as needed. They installed and grouted subway tile in the kitchen and large tiles in a brick pattern in the foyer/half bath area. They also installed baseboard around the perimeter of the small bathroom and a new toilet and adjusted doors and a radiator cover to make them fit the new floor. I furnished materials except for the cement board for the floor, mastic for all tiling, and new door sweeps. The job required considerable labor and attention to small details. Throughout the project, Dan was communicative and responsive, and both Dan and Dave are easy to work with and aim to please."

Roofing questions, answered by experts

If your roof has storm damage, there will be some telltale signs. These include missing, loose, or damaged shingles. You may notice cracks or dents on the metal parts of your roof, like flashing, gutters, or metal panels. Water leaks are another big indicator. So are visible signs of impact. Rather than climb up on your roof to check, hire a professional to inspect the area  safely.

Yes, a tile roof will increase the value of your home more than an asphalt shingle roof. Not only do tile roofs look nicer and add more to your curb appeal, but buyers will understand that roof tiles last longer than most other materials, so they can expect minimal maintenance and a long roof lifespan after closing, which often means they’ll be willing to pay more for a home with this roof option.

Roofs last about 20 to 50 years, depending on the material, quality of installation, level of maintenance, and local climate. An asphalt shingle roof tends not to last as long, about 20 years, while a metal, slate, or tile roof may last over 50 years with proper care. Many roofs last an average of 25 years.

A well-maintained tile roof can last up to 100 years—but it depends on the type of tiles. Clay and concrete tiles are the most durable and last anywhere from 30 to 100 years, depending on maintenance. Metal roofing generally lasts 40 to 70 years, and composite roofing lasts 20 to 50 years.

Building code allows 24-inch on-center spacing for roof trusses. However, you can install them on 12- or 16-inch centers to handle large loads or other exceptional circumstances. In cases such as covering a wide span or supporting alternative roofing materials, where a structural engineer needs to evaluate or create a design for your trusses, the plans will indicate the spacing.
