"The automatic pool cover business is dominated by a few large companies that become an effective monopoly after you’ve bought a cover from one of them and its exclusive local dealer. This manufacturer-dealer duo then has the opportunity to act exactly as you’d expect a monopolist would. In my experience, Solar Pool Covers took advantage of that power. The price for installing its equipment was good, and they did a good job installing it. But they have the option to get you on the repairs, where they have you over the barrel. On labor, they lowballed me on how much time they thought the repair would take and then worked slowly on the job (to be fair, it was a hot, muggy day). On parts, the manufacturer doesn’t disclose the price of parts on its website, except to its dealers. So Solar Pool Covers could mark up its parts price by a factor of five and then when I called them out on it acknowledge that they bundled the price of labor installing the part with the cost of the part. It was the first time I ever received a bill where labor and parts had separate line items (nothing unusual there)--but with the parts item including a hidden labor charge not in the separate labor line item. An additional part was also not listed specifically but under the larger more expensive system it was a component of, which effectively hid the name of the part that was replaced. After a service man does a job, I usually ask for a copy of the bill and then pay it then and there with a credit card. This dealer’s service man refused to give me the price of the job after it was finished, saying that he didn’t have time to fill out the bill and that time would need to be included in the bill. I’m giving them a C rather than an F because I had no problem with the work they did. The problem was the amount and way they charged for it."

Pool and Spa Servicing questions, answered by experts

If your hot tub is well-maintained, covered tightly, and the water is balanced and sanitized correctly, it can remain unused for up to two weeks without significant issues. Beyond this period, the water quality may start to deteriorate, potentially leading to the growth of algae and bacteria. However, it's crucial to note that this timeline can change due to factors like water temperature, sanitation levels, and the quality of your hot tub cover. Regular maintenance and water testing are essential to ensure the water remains safe and clean during periods of inactivity.

Yes, they provide full-service inspections, identifying and resolving any potential equipment problems.

Shocking your hot tub means adding extra chemicals to the water. Most spa experts recommend doing this once a week for proper hot tub maintenance, but you can do it more if needed. Shocking has multiple benefits, including preventing the water from becoming murky and it’s essential in removing harmful bacteria from the water.

Where you drain a hot tub largely depends on local regulations, but you must not drain chemically treated water where it can damage the environment. Direct the water toward a sanitary sewer drain that will take it to a treatment facility. If your lawn has a dedicated drainage area that’s free from plants and foundations, you can likely drain it there. Avoid storm drains, as the hot tub water will enter waterways and could hurt aquatic life. Likewise, do not pour it out directly on any public land or where it can get into your neighbors’ property.

It’s less expensive to leave your hot tub on all the time, though you’ll want to keep it at a reduced temperature. How much you use the hot tub is also a factor. You’ll want to keep it at a constant temperature between 80 and 95 degrees Fahrenheit for weekly or daily use, then bump it up right before you get in. If you don’t plan to use your hot tub that often, you can turn it off as long as there’s no risk of freezing.
