"New Look Exteriors provided fast, quality service, for a great price. They replaced damaged siding above my garage with the original manufacturer's siding. It was exactly the right color and type. NLE sales' representative, Z., was friendly and knowledgeable. He identified what needed to be done had a proposal to me quickly. The inside staff NLE, C., knew my name and made sure I knew what was next in the project and the timeline. The NLE install crew, led by G., was fast and efficient. Siding looks great. I recommend these guys. (February, 2024)."

"Murrey kept good communication with me regarding the project. He had plenty of samples of both styles and colors for the siding. The work was done in a day and we could not be more pleased."

"Vincent came to our home as soon as we reached out regarding the loss of our siding due to the wind. He was a complete gentleman, gave us a quote, and came the next day to do the job. Not only did he do a great job, but he also shoveled the snow off the sidewalk for us. As far as I am concerned, you cant get any better than that! We will never go anywhere else if we need something with our roofing or our siding. In this day and age, it is wonderful to be able to find someone who will do a great job for you, & also be fair when it comes to pricing!"

Siding FAQs, answered by experts

While vinyl is the less expensive option, composite siding has been known to be more durable than vinyl. In addition, because it is made from recycled materials, it is a more ecologically-friendly choice. Composite siding is also more luxurious looking and comes in a much wider range of styles and colors.

Oil-based stains are preferred over latex or water-based varieties because your home's cedar siding must constantly withstand the weather conditions in your location. These stains provide better penetration into the wood to more effectively protect it from UV rays and water infiltration. Oil-based stains are available in transparent, semi-transparent, opaque, or solid-color selections to achieve the look you desire.

If you have stucco on the outside of your home, it’s technically considered cladding and not siding, but beyond that, it’s impossible to tell without a little digging. Without damaging the siding material, expose part of it to see if there’s an air gap between the siding and your exterior wall. If there is, you have cladding. If the siding is affixed directly to the exterior wall, you have a simple siding system.

The main differences between dutch lap versus clapboard siding have to do with their design and texture. Clapboard siding features flat, beveled planks stacked at a slight angle, offering a simple, traditional look. Dutch lap siding features a subtly concave surface along with a notch that creates a shadowed look between the boards. This eye-catching design often resembles wood grain and introduces a noticeable shadow line, making it more visually interesting compared to the simpler look of clapboard siding.

You cannot install clapboard siding on a bare, unprepared surface. Clapboard siding requires a clean, sturdy base made from plywood or similar materials, sometimes called backerboard. Then, it needs an underlayment or sheathing, a moisture membrane to help protect the exterior wall.

Note that sometimes clapboard siding is caulked as it’s installed for additional protection. We don’t suggest this: Caulking the siding can trap moisture inside the clapboards and lead to moisture damage over time. The siding needs some space to “breathe,” especially in rainy weather.
