No, you cannot plant a tree above a gas line. Tree roots grow and spread over time and can sometimes dent, crack, or penetrate a gas line. No, Teflon tape will not stop a gas leak. In fact, no type of tape is the solution to a gas pipe leak. Teflon tape is only for preventing leaks during pipe installation, not for repairing existing leaks.

Temporarily capping a gas line—for renovations or during travel—doesn’t require a permit.
