I called McDonald Plumbing and HVAC when I saw that the toilet was leaking underneath when flushed. The company fixed the same issue about a year ago, when the wax seal was replaced. I called them again, because the first time out fixed the problem.
I put the call in around 5-6 p.m. and was told that the business was closed, and I would be charged time-and-a-half for services. The technician called and said he would be here in a few hours.
When the toilet was removed, the technician said that the wax seal needed replaced, which he would likely be successful in doing. He also said that the flange (sp?) was worn and showing a few cracks, and would likely need replaced soon. But, he added that he would not be able to do that (this night) if he had to. **If I would have known ahead of time, that a potential issue (likely from my description of problem on phone) couldn't be resolved on this call, I would have definitely waited for another time/day.** The technician worked on the toilet, trying multiple rings, unsuccessfully. During this time, he advised that there was a "clog" in the drain, and asked if I wanted to have it augered. I agreed. He spent about five-minutes working the drain to "clear" it. Note: Prior to this, the toilet was not overflowing and was flushing appropriately (aside from the underneath leak through the seal). The price was never brought up. I was never asked or told anything about price. Just if I wanted to have it done. Apparently, having this done is a considerable cost. If I knew it was going to be two-hundred dollars (told after-the-fact on the phone), there is no way I would have agreed to pay $200-or-so for a few minutes of work on a drain, that wasn't clogged or overflowing.
A short time after this, he tried another seal, and said that he wasn't going to be able to fix it (this night). And that the flange was going to have to be replaced on another date. At this point, the total cost was close to $300. I understand that this was "after hours," and I was paying time-and-a-half, but paying this much money, and having nothing resolved is where the issue is. When I was advised over the next few days that it was going to cost another $200-250 to fix the toilet (replace the flange), that was when I decided to check-around. (I ended up paying another plumber half of the latter number above to fix the toilet completely.)
So, the total cost to replace the flange in the toilet would have cost me $500-550. This did include the after hours (though it was a few hours after they closed) and the augering, which I would have never agreed to if I would have known how much it would have cost.
A few other random things:
* One of the wax seals was left in the stainless steel bathroom waste basket, which ended up getting wax all over the can. This needed cleaned extensively.
* There was a mess in the bathroom from the water. My bath towels (which I offered) and a roll of paper towels were used to clean it up.
* I was told that I would receive a receipt/invoice in the mail. It is now 2 weeks later and I am still waiting for it.
* Another plumber came out and did all of the work for less than $150, and it took about an hour.
I have no problem whatsoever paying for a service, if it is done and the issue is resolved. But paying nearly $300 for not having the issue resolved (which is the reason they were called in the first place) is difficult. And then facing another $200-250 on top of that to replace the flange? On another day? Once again, if I would have been told that there was a chance that this problem might not have been able to be resolved the evening I called, I would have waited and not taken the chance of paying for overtime and multiple days.
