J Francis Company, LLC is a professional full-service design-build contractor based in Pittsburgh since 1988. We are a one-stop design-build shop staffed with architects and designers. We perform residential remodeling and renovation including kitchens & baths, additions, basements, whole house remodels, phased renovations, master planning, space re-configurations, and outdoor living. The success of your remodeling project lies in what you have experienced during the process. The quality of that experience defines our success.

"I have been working with J Francis Company and am in the final planning phase of a complete renovation of my kitchen, laundry, and primary bath and closet. What has impressed me most about the J Francis professionals is the high level of detailed communication. We have had weekly in-person or virtual meetings, which are always followed up with written meeting notes to confirm our decisions and correct anything if needed. This keeps the project moving forward. They are resourceful in providing great options for finishes for me to choose from and have quickly learned my style and vision for my home. I truly appreciate that they are generously open to incorporating my preferences and my own finds, or suggesting something even better. They understand and respect the architectural style of the house, and my desire to balance modern functional updates while maintaining the timeless look of the house. In the midst of this planning phase there was a design staff change and the transition was nearly seamless. I have experienced renovations in 3 other homes, and so far, this has been the best experience, starting with the day the company owner came for the first visit to discuss the project, to today when I am ready to sign on the dotted and go into production. I have every reason to believe that their professionalism will continue through construction and the finished renovation."

Architects questions, answered by experts

The most idyllic building material that encapsulates the feel of Federal architecture is a brick facade, often with bricks alternating between long side and short side. Palladium and arched transom windows are also prevalent, as are flat, white window lintels. More ornate Federal architecture buildings also include columns on either side of the front door. More important than most of the finer details, though, is the symmetry from the exterior. On the interior, ornate plaster moldings and plaster ceiling medallions are indicative of the style.

Typically, architects do not build homes in a hands-on sense of doing the actual framing, roofing, or other building. Architects usually do not have the training and experience to build the homes they design. An architect would need to know how to do the specific trades required to build a house, which is possible but not a common practice. A general contractor or homebuilder typically oversees the actual details of building the house that the architect designs.

Some homes, like those with flat roofs, may not have eaves at all. Some contemporary-style homes also lack eaves, although many may have abbreviated eaves to divert water and protect the walls and foundation. Homes without eaves often have specific types of gutters affixed directly to the edge of the roof to provide adequate drainage.

A structural inspection report will include a detailed description of the structural engineer’s findings, applicable photographs, and recommendations to correct the issue. The contents of the report may depend on the scope of the inspection but might also include a time and cost estimate for recommended work to correct any structural problems found during the inspection.

Hire an architect at the very beginning of your home-building process. An architect’s training and expertise can guide the process from start to finish to ensure you don’t miss or have to redo any important steps. An architect will also provide valuable input on design, materials, and other details right from the beginning.
