"Working with Ellen Marquardt was an outstanding experience from start to finish. She asked thoughtful questions to truly understand how we wanted to use the space, and her visuals—floorplans and 3D renderings—made decision-making easy and stress-free. Her deep knowledge and clear explanations of the “why” behind each design choice gave us total confidence in the process. Highly recommend!"

Small jobs welcome

"Gary surveyed my project, provided the analysis of his design, and provided signed/sealed documents in just 11 days! He has a straightforward approach, which means you get results fast! He was more than willing to discuss any details regarding the design. We had several discussions regarding the questions I had about both the project and the process of design. I told him that I wasn't yet sure if I wanted to use a steel post or a timber post. He gladly updated the drawing to include BOTH options, so I could decide at a later time. This detail included the specifications of both posts and how they were to be tied into the rest of the structure. And, he has the most competitive prices in the area! I definitely recommend Gary for your structural analysis requirements. I plan on working with Gary again on future projects."

Architects questions, answered by experts

Whether you’re building a new home or building an extension on your existing property, you will likely need both a structural engineer and an architect. A structural engineer will determine what loads your foundation and framing can safely handle, and an architect will draw plans according to those structural calculations to simplify the building process. You can start by contacting a structural engineer near you, as many work alongside architects and can get all of the prep work done at once.

Italianate architecture is a reinterpretation of Renaissance styles, combining elements of Italian farmhouses and villas with Victorian materials and construction. This home style emerged in the Victorian era, gaining popularity in the U.S. in the mid-to late-1800s. The style came about in response to what many then viewed as the too-rigid and stuffy Classical style designs.

An architect is usually involved in the process of determining the layout and structural features and requirements of the home itself, taking into account the local codes, climate, and materials needed to make the home structurally sound. Architects may communicate more with contractors and subcontractors throughout the building process. In comparison to architects, interior designers typically focus on the aesthetics of a home interior and possibly exterior, helping the homeowner decide on color schemes, textures, and materials to incorporate into the design.

While towers and turrets are frequently present in Queen Anne-style houses, these design elements are not necessary for a home to be considered a Queen Anne. Turrets and towers add visual interest and unique interior spaces, but many Queen Anne homes do not contain these features.

British architect John Nash is credited with creating the Italianate style of architecture. The style was further popularized in the U.S. by landscape architect Andrew Jackson Downing and architect Calvert Vaux. The style spread across the U.S. due to Downing’s popular book on the style and the availability of plans and materials due to the mass production of the Industrial Revolution.
