You can apply stain over peeling stain, but it’s not a good idea. Your old stain will get in the way of your new stain bonding to the wood, so you’re likely going to see the same issue again shortly after application. Your best option is to sand off the old stain and clean the surface thoroughly before applying new stain.

The best ways to protect floors when painting depend in part on the type of paint you’re using.  When you’re using latex paint, most people will choose a drop cloth consisting of canvas, plastic, or heavy paper to protect the floor. If you are using oil-based paint, you may want to select a waterproof plastic sheet that will keep any paint from seeping through.

Painting over cracks without repairing them first will simply lead to needing to fix them later. They will reappear in short order. Usually, just a bit of spackle and a putty knife before painting will do the trick. However, if there are significant cracks, find the source of the problem and fix it before moving forward.

In addition to paint, you’ll need some other supplies to paint a house yourself. These include: 

  • Brushes: $3–$20 each

  • Tape: $3–$10 per roll

  • Drop cloth: $5–$30 each

  • Tray: $2–$5 each

  • Rollers: $10–$100 each

  • House ladder: $100–$300

When you hire a professional painter, this expert may use a paint sprayer to repaint a room instead of a roller and brushes. Using a paint sprayer versus a roller for a DIY job can be tough for a beginner. The cost of renting or buying a sprayer will be higher than buying rollers and brushes. It can be tough to ensure even coverage with a sprayer when you’re a beginner. Avoiding splatters and overspray in other areas of the room can be difficult, too. Sprayers will save a lot of time, though.
