Black Rock Paving and Sealcoating Inc. serving the Tri-State area. Established in the year 2000 with four generations of experience behind us since 1956. Built on honesty, integrity, and hard work make Black Rock Paving your choice for your next paving project. We have many options for you to choose from Asphalt, Concrete, Tar & Gravel, Brick Pavers, or Go Green with recycled Asphalt Millings.

"They used substandard material. The paver laid uneven ridged blacktop which was uneven and had valleys in it. Less than a year there is small potholes starting where the blacktop is coming apart. They refuse to fix their workmanship. They said it was good for 30 years and it has not lasted a year. They have been reported to Delaware BBB and they refused to respond. Presently waiting to see if they respond to the Delaware AG office. This company is a ripoff company who does not stand behind their work. As a Senior Citizen I consider them a con artist company who rips off Senior Citizens. Do not believe or trust them in their verbal agreements. Work was done on 1/13/2020 and last contacted them on 8/24/2020 before contacting Del BBB and Del AG office."

Asphalt Driveways questions, answered by experts

Asphalt and tarmac are not the same thing. Traditional tarmac, short for tarmacadam, uses tar as a binder to hold crushed stone together. Asphalt uses bitumen—a byproduct of crude oil—to bind aggregate. Though tarmac was once a go-to for roads, asphalt has become the modern standard. And these days, most surfaces referred to as “tarmac” are actually asphalt. So, while the names may overlap, the key distinction lies in the binder—tar for tarmac and bitumen for asphalt.

Pavers last longer than both concrete and asphalt when well cared for. Since you can place individual pavers that suffer damage, you won't need to repave the entire driveway for an average of up to 50 years. However, the best material for you comes down to your local climate and budget.

Asphalt provides durability, cost-effectiveness, and a smooth surface ideal for high-traffic areas.

It’s best to weigh the pros and cons of each material and decide on your priorities for your driveway. Gravel won’t be an appropriate choice if your driveway experiences heavy traffic. You’ll find that you need to level and top it off regularly, which could make the material a much more expensive option.

The three most common types of asphalt are hot asphalt, MC cold mix, and UPM asphalt. Hot asphalt is used most often for paving and patching roadways while it’s hot and workable. MC cold mix asphalt cures more slowly than hot asphalt, but it can be used for temporary patches and repairs in low-traffic areas. UPM is also used cold, but it can be used as a longer-term fix, usable in almost any conditions at almost any temperature.
