"Thorough and informative. Our inspector, Chris, was there before our appointment to unlock doors, turn on lights, and get acclimated with the house. The inspection lasted about 3 hours and Chris explained things as he went. Chris even made it on to the very steep roof. We received the report the very next day. The report was thorough and clear with pictures for every finding."

"Joe knows radon.  He put in a system on short notice in my two story colonial with full basement.  I shopped around to two other Radon contractors and his was either the lowest or close to it, but he was also the first that I could schedule.  FYI: He said the overall cost was less because there was an existing sump pit.  We scheduled for the morning and I gave him access to the house.  By the time I got to the house at 11am he was done and gone with only the odor of fresh caulking, PVC pipes, and the muffled whirl of a fan.  The installation was professional with an acrylic custom cover cut to fit over the sump pit to keep debris out.  Plenty of signage and meters on the installed equipment indicating fan circuit, basically informing me and any future owner, "Do not shut this Off".  The radon reading in the basement was 25.4.  Joe was confident that once the system was in, it was going to be less than 1 (less than 4 is safe per EPA rules).  we tested three days later, and the official reading was 0.9.  Looking at the quality of work, I'd use him for any other venting related needs in this or future house.
He has an "F" grade from someone who complained about something not working after three months and he was going to charge a labor fee.  This is just my 2 cents, but don't think that was fair, as he does give you a 7 year warranty.  He warrants equipment for 7 years and will replace out equipment but there is a labor charge.  This is clearly spelled out in his contract.

"It was a little tough to get in touch with John at first as he apparently does home inspections part time, but once I did he was very prompt and was very thorough in his inspection. He explained everything in a manner that I could understand and answered all of my questions without being condescending. If he's still doing home inspections when I look to buy another house I'd certainly work with him again."

Radon Detection and Reduction questions, answered by experts

While DIY testing is possible, abatement generally requires professional installation to ensure efficacy and meet safety standards.

The average radon mitigation system uses about 876 kWh of electricity per year, although the exact amount of electricity used will vary depending on the size of the radon fan. Once the system is installed, the annual increase to your energy bill could range from $30 to $300 per year, again depending on the size of the fan.

Your radon fan needs to operate 24/7 to be effective. The only time the fan isn't operating is during its replacement. Radon levels in the home can increase within hours if the fan stops working or something obstructs the stack vent. Fortunately, radon systems require no downtime maintenance between fan changes.

No level of radon is technically safe, but since it is present everywhere, complete avoidance is impossible. The average radon level in homes across the United States is 1.3 picocuries per liter (pCi/L). The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recommends taking preventative measures if your home's radon levels are between 2 and 4 pCi/L or higher.
