"Prodigy Electrical is top notch!! From the moment they stepped on the property, they were professional. They arrived at 8:00 A.M. and hit the floor running. Keaton (owner), Simon ( lead tech), Ken and Tim went right to what had to be done. We were having the main panel upgraded: 2 ceiling fans, and their circuits installed: an outdoor box and cabling installed for the new hot tub, and a new meter / main switch installed. They kept us informed the whole time. Cleaned up after each stage of install. When they were done (4:15 P.M.), you wouldnt have known that they were here. They cleaned up every site they worked in. Took all the mess and garbage with them. We would and do highly recommend Prodigy Electrical Group. You will be very happy you hired them. Andrew & Cyndi K. Derry, PA"

"Bought the 75 dollar ceiling fan replacement special, unfortunately there were issues with the way the original ceiling fan was installed. It ended up costing me an extra 170 bucks to have the new one installed properly. The installation was successful and the tech was nice and did the work quickly."

"I WAS VERY PLEASED WITH THE LAYOUT THEY PRESENTED TO ME REGARDING THE POSITIONING OF THE LIGHTS AND THE LIGHTING REQUIREMENTS THAT I WOULD NEED FOR MY NEWLY REMODELED KITCHEN. THEIR CREW SIZE WAS LARGE ENOUGH TO COMPLETE THE PROJECT IN A TIMELY MANNER AND THEY WERE WERE NEAT AND TIDY. IN ADDITION THEY DIDN'T LEAVE ANYTHING FOR ME TO CLEAN UP AFTER THEY LEFT."

"We had more things to be done than could be accomplished in four hours, but they did install a much needed ceiling fan in our kitchen. The installation was neat, and the fan has worked well so far. Don and his co-worker were prompt, polite, and knowledgeable about could and couldn't be done, given the wiring in our old house.

Ceiling Fans questions, answered by experts

Essential tools for ceiling fan installation include a ladder, screwdriver, pliers, wire strippers, and a circuit tester. If the ceiling is angled or features unique configurations, ensure the availability of a compatible mounting bracket.

For a 12x12 room, a fan between 36" and 50" will work, as it falls in the range for spaces up to 144 square feet. These size fans provide adequate air circulation and ensure a comfortable environment without being overpowering. Even better, they come in a broad range of styles, offering aesthetics and functionality, making them suitable choices for maintaining an ideal room temperature and enhancing overall comfort.

Whether you can install a ceiling fan yourself depends on if you're replacing an existing fixture or installing one where no wiring exists. If you are replacing an existing fan, an experienced DIYer may be able to do the job, which can save on labor costs. This work typically doesn’t require a permit, but there’s always a safety risk when dealing with electrical components, so hiring a pro is still a good idea, especially if you aren't handy. Keep in mind you may need a special ladder for high or vaulted ceilings. However, if you are installing a new ceiling fan where there is no current fixture, you must hire a licensed electrician. In most areas, it is required by law that a professional runs new wiring and pulls the necessary permits. Attempting to install wiring yourself can be dangerous and a code violation.

To determine if your ceiling box can support a fan, you must check if it is specifically fan-rated. Manufacturers are required to indicate this on the box itself. You may need to remove the existing light fixture to look inside the ceiling box for an inscription stating it is rated for fan use. If you do not see this confirmation, the box is likely not strong enough and must be replaced with a fan-rated junction box. For a proper and safe installation, you should also use a fan brace to secure the new box between the ceiling joists, which provides the necessary support for the fan's weight and motion.

There’s no reason why you can’t install a ceiling fan anywhere in your home, such as in living rooms, offices, bedrooms, and dining areas. Most bathrooms already have ventilation and don’t need a ceiling fan. For safety purposes, avoid installing a ceiling fan where the blades will be less than eight feet from the floor, near bunk beds, or anywhere else they may hit nearby objects.
