"I called Your Electric Now on a Tuesday and was able to get an appointment for a quote very quickly.  John came to my house to provide a quote.  He was thorough and quick with the quote for the work which was to install a ceiling fan in a two story family room and two light fixtures (dining room and stair landing). Your Electic Now's quote was significantly less than other quotes i had received due to Your Electric Now having the required equipment for the installation.  Providers arrived on time and completed work in a timely manner.  Upon arrival, the two gentlemen moved my furniture out of the way and used drop cloths to ensure my furniture and carpets were protected from any dust or debris.  After the installation, they moved the furniture back, packed up all packaging and garbage and put the debris in my garage.  I was quite pleased with the professionalism of Your Electric Now.
I would recommend and use Your Electric Now again for any electrical work.

"Jason installed doorbells at 2 doors. There were no functioning doorbells when I purchased this house 5 years ago. Various contractors warned me of the difficulty and expense of hardwired installations, making me put off the project. Wireless doorbells were unreliable. I was encouraged by James, who did my annual electrical maintenance, and scheduled the work for me. Jason did a fantastic job by creative thinking to avoid the difficulties I'd previously been warned about. He did the job quickly, neatly, and very successfully. I am thrilled to have working doorbells for the first time in 5 years!"

"Dave and his guys did a great job, as always. He came out next day. Fixed an outdoor outlet by my pool and installed a Ring flood light and camera for my side yard. Done within an hour at a very reasonable price. Can't recommend them enough."

Generator Install questions, answered by experts

To determine the right size generator for your house, you should calculate the total wattage of the appliances and devices you want to power during an outage. List all essential items, note their start-up wattages, and add them together.

Here are some typical wattage requirements for common appliances:

  • Refrigerator: 600 watts

  • Large dehumidifier: 700 watts

  • Large window air conditioner: 1,400 watts

  • Water heater: 3,000 to 4,500 watts

  • Electric furnace: 5,000 to 25,000 watts

A 7,500-watt generator might be sufficient for essentials like a refrigerator, freezer, well pump, and lighting circuits. However, for high-demand items like a water heater or furnace, a whole-home generator is a better choice. A portable generator may be enough if you only need to power a few critical items.

While home square footage can offer a rough estimate, it is not always a reliable indicator. For reference, here are some typical generator sizes based on square footage:

  • 1,000 sq ft: 6–9 kW

  • 1,500 sq ft: 7–10 kW

  • 2,000 sq ft: 10–14 kW

  • 2,500 sq ft: 12–16 kW

  • 3,000 sq ft: 16–20 kW+

For the most accurate sizing, consult a professional who can calculate your home's peak and average power consumption and recommend the optimal generator.

You can determine what size generator you need for a transfer switch by matching the switch to the largest outlet on your generator. Larger generators can power up to 10 circuits, while most 5,000-watt generators can provide power to six circuits. So, if your generator’s largest outlet is 30 amps, you’ll need a 30-amp transfer switch.

Potential benefits of using a natural gas generator include reducing your carbon footprint, lower likelihood of carbon monoxide exposure, budget-friendly operating costs, and low-maintenance, continuous fuel supply. Some possible drawbacks, though, include higher initial installation costs, dependency on a natural gas supply, and installation complexity. Keep in mind that pros and cons will vary based on the type and brand of natural gas generator.

Whole-house generators need to be installed on level ground several feet away from walls and other objects. Because they tap into the electrical system directly, they usually need to be close to your home electrical panel for a transfer switch installation. It also helps with installation if they are near to a gas line or propane tank installation.

Yes, in some locations, it is required by the National Electric Code (NEC) to have a transfer switch installed for electrical emergencies. In addition to following electrical code, generator transfer switches ensure your home is fully protected during a power outage. By switching the power from the main breaker to the generator breaker, you can seamlessly operate your HVAC, lights, appliances, devices, and more during an emergency.
