"The job was extremely difficult due to three different layers of insulation in my attic including blown in insulation. They suggested I go with the foam. I requested they not spend to much time cleaning up because I wanted to clean the entire garage."

"I had them come over and do a price on a rental property basement. The house is worth about 80k and I explained to him that as an appt I didn't want to invest a lot of money. Tenants do not usually care for things the same way the homeowner would. He came back with a price of 15 to 20k. For simply drywall and plaster. I asked him to break down the PLASTER only price...and was quoted 5k. I had my 1st floor done last year...full kitchen and dining area and a large stairway with 20 foot ceilings. I was charged just over 700 for the work through my contractor. I would have had them working again but they are tied up for 6 months and I couldn't wait. After telling him I thought the price was awfully high for the small area. He then made me fell like I was a total CHEAPSKATE. In tough economic times and with all his great reviews I was very disappointed in his attitude. I think the man was a sales rep for the company. But was a bit of a smart*expletive*. Which just wasn't the attitude I would want from anyone doing work for me. BTW I own 4 rental properties...and I put 25k into the upper floor remodel. So I really don't consider myself CHEAP. But I'll keep my 20k in my pocket and spend 8 with another contractor."

Drywall Insulation questions, answered by experts

Plastering lasts for around 15 to 20 years without needing repairs or maintenance in most cases, and with proper upkeep, plastering can last a lifetime—sometimes more than 100 years. Plaster repair costs between $1 and $3 per square foot, and you may need these services once every 15 to 20 years or so unless you have a harsh climate where humidity changes are a constant issue. You can also opt to skim-coat plaster for between $0.90 and $1.30 per square foot, which may serve you better in the long run.

If you’re installing new drywall, you may need to skim coat the drywall first for a smooth finish and to allow the primer to adhere to the wall. It’s only necessary if there are imperfections in your drywall due to issues with the studs or improper drywall installation. If you’re refreshing existing walls, you may want to skim coat if there are imperfections across the wall. As an alternative, you can repair your drywall and sand it for a smooth finish before painting.

Yes, drywall can hold a 50-pound TV. However, when mounting a TV, you’ll either need to attach it to wall studs or use drywall anchors. If you use anchors, make sure to buy a type that can hold at least 50 pounds. Molly bolts, threaded anchors, and toggle bolts are all good options. For extra support, you can also install a wall mounting plate with the anchors.

Yes, you can speed up the time it takes for plaster to dry, but it's important to do so carefully to avoid issues like cracking or crumbling. Proper ventilation is key; open a window or use a fan to circulate air in the room. Heat can also accelerate drying, but be cautious, as too much heat can cause the plaster to dry too quickly and crack. Check the plaster's packaging for the recommended drying temperature and set the room's thermostat accordingly. While managing humidity is important, avoid using a dehumidifier, which can remove moisture too aggressively and result in crumbly plaster.

Drywall can be toxic to the environment and to humans in some cases. As drywall breaks down in a landfill and comes in contact with other organic chemicals, it can create hydrogen sulfide gas or leach into the groundwater. Additionally, the CDC recommends methods for controlling the inhalation of drywall dust when handled. While the common ingredients of drywall—gypsum, silica, and mica—are naturally occurring, they can cause irritation in some humans.
