We repair antiques: antique chair caning, antique wicker furniture. Antiques repair is our work; chair caning and wicker furniture repair, our specialty. The restoration process involved for an antique chair or rocker may include hand refinishing, replacement of chair parts, and the reweaving of a chair seat. Reweaving may include strand or web caning, fiber rush, Danish cord, Shaker tape, and flat reed or splint seat weaving. We also repair and restore antique wicker furniture. Wicker is made with a natural material or twisted paper and over time the wicker reed may break down. We replace individual weavers and spokes on any wicker chair, chaise, settee, swing, or rocker. Furniture Refinishing questions, answered by experts

Yes, refinishing can decrease or even diminish the value of antique furniture, as most collectors look for original finishes to maintain the piece’s historical integrity. Learning how to clean antique wood and carefully restore the finish without stripping it is the best way to maintain the piece’s original value. Either way, it’s best to take it to a professional furniture refinishing and restoration expert rather than attempting a DIY restoration.

Wood stains last anywhere from two to five years, depending on exposure to the elements, your local climate, the type of stain, and the surface it’s on. For instance, vertical surfaces last longer than horizontal surfaces. Some types of woods, like dense hardwoods, will require a recoat yearly, as they are too dense for the stain to absorb. In any event, apply a recoat every 2 to 4 years. As for storage, a can of unopened stain can last up to 5 years, though results may vary.

Yes, you can fill rotten wood with expanding foam. You may prefer using an expanding foam treatment instead of wood filler since the latter can take a long time to dry. It may also provide an easier solution when you’re dealing with smaller gaps. If you use expanding foam, allow it to cure for about 24 hours before you sand and prime it.

In some cases, a simple clean, polish, and wax can make antique wood furniture look brand-new. However, always be sure to check the type and state of the current finish. Some furniture will require professional care, a new coat of finish, or even a new layer of stain to look like new.

Wood furniture is usually vulnerable to water damage. However, larger furniture tends to have a high chance of being salvaged as long as it hasn’t been standing in water for more than 24 hours. You can restore bedpoles, table and couch legs, and other wood parts that haven’t been fully saturated. Meanwhile, smaller objects like decors or furniture with fabric wrapping may require full replacement.
