"Highly professional and fairly priced. If you want a great job with someone who puts the effort into a perfect job, this is your guy! The residential driveways look so good that even after several weeks they still have the majority of the original sheen and people as us if we have the driveways freshly asphalted. We had oil based spray put down on ours and there is no over spray, plants were kept protected and the driveway was completely cleared/cleaned prior to the seal coating. I HIGHLY recommend!!!"

"Richard Cooper’s All Around Asphalt did an excellent job repairing weak spots and then repaving our driveway. After I explained our problems, he immediately described how he would fix it and quoted reasonable price. His crew arrived the next morning and finished the job by that afternoon. In the 20 days since we have 3 heavy rain storms and the driveway drained with no problems! This is the best driveway we have had in the 38 years we have lived here. Thank you, Richard!"

"This company resurfaced my driveway which was completely repaved by another service only 5 years ago. The previous work did not hold up so I chose to resurface using JHR. What a beautiful job they did…they removed a portion of the driveway, addressed the cracks and filled in a very large hole which had developed. I am completely satisfied with the work and received a fair price. It was worth waiting to get on their schedule….next year they will seal the driveway…great company to work with."

Small jobs welcome

"My wife and I just had Oakland give us a quote, plan and then install, pour, a 8.5 cubic yard patio after removing the trex deck that it was time to retire around our inground pool. After removal of the deck it was discovered that there was electrical work that needed to be rerun to our pool pump house and a Jacuzzi we were replacing. This they had no problem incorporating into the job without batting an eye. Communication was good. And from the plan, to scheduling, to actually accomplishing the task, considering the bad weather we were having, everything was done professionally, and on time in spite of whatever obstacles were thrown in the way. The crew was professional and courteous, and went out of their way to protect all that was necessary around what they were doing. They went out of their way to meticulously clean up the job and ensure everything was to our complete satisfaction before calling it done. All was done in a timely manner in spite of the atrocious weather they had to work around and through in getting it finished. My wife and I could not be happier with the job, and I would highly recommend this company to anyone looking to have concrete work done for any reason."

"The entire process from the quote to the work being completed was a great experience. Henry genuinely cared about making sure we got what we wanted and needed and that the job was done right. He was friendly, kind and very professional. He and his crew did an excellent job and worked hard. The driveway is absolutely beautiful, graded perfectly and radically transformed the look of our 1800s farmhouse. I'm recommending Henry's to everyone I know."

"Joe and his crew just finished up installing our fence and we couldn't be happier with the process and the end result. The guys were on time, extremely courteous to both us and our neighbors, worked very hard and got everything done in the estimated time frame. They kept the noise to a minimum (that can be reasonably expected) and were just fantastic to have around. Joe and his crew followed all of the special instructions for the fence (no jack hammers, be careful of the retaining wall integrity) and left our yard in excellent shape. We have had other work done in the recent past where the crew left their trash in our yard, didn't listen to our needs/requirements, and overall were surly and unapproachable. Joe and his team were fantastic. The fence and gate look great and you can tell it is high quality work and materials."

Asphalt Driveways questions, answered by experts

The choice between asphalt and concrete depends on your priorities, budget, and climate.

Concrete is generally more durable, lasting up to 50 years with minimal upkeep, and offers more customization options like staining and stamping, which can add more to a home's value. However, it is more expensive upfront and can be prone to cracking in cold climates where water can freeze and expand.

Asphalt is typically cheaper and quicker to install and is easier to repair. It performs better in colder climates. However, it requires more maintenance, including regular resealing, has a shorter lifespan, and can get hot and sticky in intense sunlight.

Ultimately, if durability and long-term value are key, concrete is often the better choice. If upfront cost and performance in cold weather are more important, asphalt may be preferable.

Common alternatives to a gravel driveway include concrete, asphalt, brick, stone pavers, and permeable pavers. Concrete and asphalt are generally the most affordable options. However, concrete can be prone to cracking in cold climates, while asphalt may soften in areas with high heat and direct sun exposure. For enhanced curb appeal, brick, stone, and permeable pavers are popular choices, though their installation can be more expensive due to intricate designs. Stone pavers offer a natural look and are sometimes installed with gravel around them. Both permeable pavers and brick driveways provide excellent drainage, which helps prevent flooding and reduce water runoff.

New asphalt goes through two stages: drying and curing. Drying typically takes 24 to 72 hours, after which the surface is solid enough for light use like walking or careful driving. While you may be able to park on it after 72 hours, the surface is still soft and should be treated gently. Full curing is a much longer process, taking anywhere from 30 days to a full year for the asphalt to reach maximum strength. During this extended curing period, the asphalt is susceptible to damage from heavy vehicles, sharp objects, and high temperatures. Factors like weather, the specific asphalt mix, and application thickness all influence drying and curing times. For the most accurate timeline and to ensure the longevity of your new asphalt, it is always best to consult with your installation contractor for their specific recommendations.

Recycled asphalt is not better than gravel, but can be a good alternative. It is inexpensive, but not as low-cost as gravel, and doesn’t tend to last as long. Recycled asphalt isn’t as dusty as gravel and is more environmentally friendly. The black look can be something that homeowners prefer. No matter what, ensure you choose an experienced recycled asphalt contractor.

Concrete is typically the best material for a driveway if you’re looking for longevity, cost-effectiveness, and ease of maintenance. But, it’s not ideal for areas with annual freeze-frost cycles, nor is it the most attractive option—although you can get it stamped or painted. If your location is consistently below freezing, asphalt may be a better choice.
