"Steve replaced all of my smoke detectors with ease. He found that one smoke detector was wired incorrectly from the last time it was swapped out and it was causing problems with the rest. He brought the smoke detectors with him so I didn't have to try and pick them out myself. They also came with a warranty. He was very helpful with other electrical questions and I am confident if I have any other projects Steve will be my first call. I thought the price for everything he did was very reasonable."

Electrical questions, answered by experts

You don’t need an electrician to change an outlet—but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t hire one. Working with electricity can be dangerous, not only for you but also for your home and the members of your household. There’s the risk of electrocution, poor wiring burnout, and electrical fire. When you hire a licensed electrician, you’ll have peace of mind knowing that your electrical outlets are installed correctly and up to code.

No, it is not safe to use an outlet that sparked. A spark from an outlet could indicate a short circuit, loose or frayed wiring, or other serious damage. Continuing to use an outlet that sparks can increase the risk of electrical shock, electrical fires, and other hazards. It's important to turn off the power to the outlet at the circuit breaker if possible and avoid using the outlet until a licensed electrician has inspected and repaired it.

If you connect the wrong electrical wires together, it can lead to a very dangerous electrical shock. All wires should be matched with wires of the same color. It’s very important to consult an electrician if you’re unsure about how to wire your fixture.

Doorbell wires typically won't spark because they carry low voltage. However, if there's a short circuit or damaged wiring, sparking could occur. Always turn off the power at the breaker box before working with doorbell wires to prevent any risk. If you notice any sparking, it's a sign of a problem that a professional electrician should address.

If you are having trouble determining the right breaker size for your water heater, it is a great idea to contact an electrician near you to help. They can help you determine the best option for your home and install the circuit breaker for you, ensuring that you have all the proper permits and that your circuit breaker won’t overload, which could lead to fire and other damage.
