"SafeStreets’ alarm system is fantastic. The motion sensors, door/window contacts, and cameras work flawlessly. The home automation features are a huge plus—I can control everything from my phone. Highly recommend SafeStreets to anyone looking for reliable security."

"We didn’t realize how many items could be integrated into our ADT security system. But after speaking with the helpful representative on the phone for about 10 minutes, we decided to go forward with their full home automation package. Not only are the doors and windows secure, but we can control lights, the thermostat, and the garage door."

"Install was easy. Up front cost was pretty low with Angie's List coupon. Monthly price is a little high compared to competing companies. Response time with alarms is excellent. I was advised to use glass break alarms within 10 ft of my first floor windows, which we installed correctly. I asked prior to installation if having one in the kitchen would cause false alarms due to dishes clanging, etc. I was told the glass break alarms are configured to a precise frequency that alarms with breaking glass. So, not a "no", but not really an answer. Well, every time we cook dinner, wash dishes or empty the dish washer, the kitchen glass break alarm gives a warning which would sound the alarm if it was set. This has caused us a number of false alarms while we've been away due to shifting bowls or plates in our drying rack. For the first several we've had to pay our police department $120 to check the house, and I was only notified after the first alarm that there was a cheaper option for a security company to drive by to check for a break in."

"I've had security systems in our houses since ...forever. It's not that we are in a bad area, it's just nice to know it's being monitored while your away...fire, break-in, or pets are not loose running amuck. Historically we have been with a competitor, ADT. We were looking for a system we are able to check in on and make sure it's armed while we are away. Since we come and go so much and seem to be in a rush to get places, sometimes you can't recall if you set the alarm. When I called ADT to ask if our alarm was set, they replied "you don't pay us to monitor that". I felt like this was a very cold response. When I talked with a rep. about reconfiguring our plan it wasn't that far off financially from signing with Omniguard. In addition the sales person didn't actually know the products that were available to configure with out system. When I called in to speak to corporate about my account they indicated that the authorized dealers must have made a mistake and then the lady proceeded to tell me she doesn't like all of their authorized dealers...1. Not appropriate 2. Their whole gimmick is that their entire service from install to monitoring is ADT. 3. Obviously that's not a reason to sign up with them since their monitoring service literally cannot tell me anymore than my keypad...if even that much. They just had no real people that seemed to care about what I wanted...they wanted to put us in a box. Chris listened to what we wanted and why. He made suggestions where applicable and did everything he could to make things affordable for us. We couldn't sign up right away and he was so very patient with us. A few months later when we were ready to sign up he got us on the schedule and laid everything out so there were no surprises. Even the day of when I cancelled my other service and they threw all these charges on me, I had been told we were out of contract, he helped us figure out a way to cover some of them and still be able to proceed with Omniguard. Then Dan came out for install and was very efficient while taking the time to answer any of our questions. I feel Omniguard takes pride in the work they do and the employees seem to like their job. This is nice to see. They understand their product and if they are not sure about some random question I've asked, they find the answer. My husband and I did our homework and looked at a lot of options. We didn't go with Omniguard on a whim... they are the whole package. One of my favorite things about their service is there are real people ready and able to help at all times. Thanks Chris and Dan for making this so very easy!"

"They gave us the best rate and the setup was great for ADT system. The installer did have to tell us about other options that would cost more money but he did not pressure us when we declined. We had door, window and motion detectors included. They gave us a week to practice on the new system, but we could call if we were ready to go live sooner which we did. Set up was quick, easy and uneventful. Very nice installer, Phillip Brown. The cost was quoted at a low price, but the bill came from ADT and was much higher. We were told the contract to ADT did not catch up and we will be getting the lower price with a reimbursement for the excess of the first bill. We did the $99 install and are getting a $100 gift card back. 3 year contract is a little annoying but we plan to stay here for a long time."

"We installed it ourselves. For all the equipment and everything it was $103. The price was very good because my monthly payment was only $49 a month. I like them better and I have heard too many horror stories for another company. Responsiveness, I would have to give them a 100%. I have set the alarm off by opening the door without turning it off and they were right on top of it to call and make sure we were okay. I love it. I feel safe. The quality is good. We own our equipment so when we move it will go with us. We have 9 sensors that came with that plus the other one that will go off when you move around, the motion sensor. I have had no bad problems at all. They are alert and call right away to make sure we are okay. I have the key fob and also it is battery operated if the power goes out. It is wireless and I can program it from my phone."

Security Doors questions, answered by experts

While security hubs can streamline the management of security cameras, the placement of cameras itself is often determined by factors like your property layout, security objectives, and areas of concern.

The main difference between different security sensor options is the type of motion each detects. A motion detector monitors obvious movements in hallways, entrances, and exits. On the other hand, a presence detector is more sensitive and captures smaller moves. A window sensor typically focuses on the opening and closing of the window, whereas a glass break sensor alarms you when a glass is broken.

The average cost to install a home security system is about $750. However, the price can range from as little as $200 for a simple wireless camera setup to $2,000 for a fully monitored, hardwired system. A typical price range is $280 to $1,150. Several factors determine the final cost, including the type of system, equipment, materials, labor, activation fees, monthly surveillance fees, and permits. Optional upgrades will also add to the price, such as video surveillance monitoring ($40–$65 per month), smart locks ($150), smart lighting ($15–$90), smart smoke and carbon monoxide alarms ($35–$100), and a smart thermostat ($130–$500).

With the popularity of DIY security cameras and video surveillance systems, it’s important to understand the benefits and potential drawbacks to decide if it’s the right choice for you. Advantages and disadvantages include:

Pros

  • Video footage readily available

  • Reduced home insurance

  • Save on labor costs by installing security cameras yourself

  • Wireless systems are easy to move and set up

  • Monitor from your smartphone

  • Avoid false alarms

Cons

  • Features may be vulnerable to hackers

  • No direct link to authorities

  • Risk of installing the system improperly, reducing its effectiveness

Options include wired or wireless systems with night vision and motion detection.
