"Not efficient with work. Initially scheduled and they didn’t have the appt in their system when i called the day before to confirm. Rescheduled and they put new hardware on before checking with me if it was ok to install. Hardware was ugly so i rescheduled for them to come out to change hardware and they did not show up at scheduled appt. I called and they informed me that someone called in sick and they had tried to call- no missed calls on my cell or home phone. I decided to schedule with Keyhole instead and was much happier with the service."

Although you should rekey your locks after moving into a new home, you may feel more comfortable replacing the locks entirely. Here are some other scenarios when you should replace your locks rather than rekey them:

  • When someone moves out of your home.

  • Your home experiences any type of break-in.

  • You lose your key with the address on it.

A deadbolt lock is typically considered more secure than a regular lock based on its internal construction. Each deadbolt type has varying levels of security, ranging from withstanding a small amount of force to those that can take on multiple strikes and greater force. Regular locks provide little to no security and are typically used more for easy entry and simple installation.

The average lifespan of a door lock is seven to 10 years, so it’s best to err on the side of caution and change them early, especially if they are showing signs of wear and tear. Examples of deterioration include visible rust and difficulty opening or closing the door. Some locks can work safely beyond 10 years, but it depends on how often they are used and whether they are exposed to damaging environmental conditions like precipitation or extreme temperatures.
