"We were so impressed with Home Comfort! We had a lot of questions when doing our research and Aaron and Chris showed exceptional patience, coming out to our house twice to go over the different product options available to us and describe the installation process. We chose Home Comfort over the other 4 contractors we interviewed because we liked their professionalism, their ratings on Angie's List, and their O% financing option. The installation went like clockwork. Just as had been described to us, first the electricians came, who were so friendly and efficient. Then came the installation crew who worked steadily through the day, pausing to give me updates along the way. Both the furnace and air conditioning unit were installed carefully, with great attention to detail. We appreciated that they covered our floors and cleaned up thoroughly when they were done. They also fixed the insulation in our attic that had fallen down, before running the coolant lines through. Last came Johnny who fired up the system and made sure both the furnace and air conditioner were communicating properly with our new thermostat. Ideally, you can add new insulation to your existing insulation. However, some circumstances require you to remove old insulation before adding any new insulation: 

  • If the insulation is over 15 years old

  • If the insulation is wet or moldy

  • If it is vermiculite insulation

  • If you see signs of pest infestation

Removing old insulation is best left to a pro who can safely dispose of potential moldy or asbestos-ridden insulation.

Your house may be cold even if the heat is on because of bad insulation, gaps in doors, small holes pulling hot air from the home, or excess humidity. The heater itself might be malfunctioning. For this problem, you’d need to talk to an HVAC pro. If you have a gas heating system (most do) this should be considered an urgent job as natural gas could be leaking in your home.

When looking for a company who installs insulation, your best bet is usually to work with an insulation contractor or professional insulation company. If you can't find a local insulation company, working with a general contractor can be another option. No matter who you hire, always confirm that they have experience.

Spreading tin foil over your windows works similarly to radiant barrier insulation, but not as well. It will reflect some of the sunlight that would otherwise come through the glass and warm up the inside of your home, so it might help a little to keep your home cool in the summer. However, the appearance isn’t preferable to blinds or drapes that can offer the same benefits. You might also consider tinting your windows instead, which is a more aesthetically pleasing change that can still block a good portion of the solar heat coming through your windows.

Most insulation lasts 15 to 20 years, but it really depends on the type of insulation. Spray foam is a permanent insulation material that can last up to 100 years. Fiberglass and cellulose typically settle, shift, or deteriorate around 15 years. Once your insulation reaches the 15-year mark, it's time to check it for signs of needing to be replaced.
