The signs of rot depend on the type. Dry rot looks like cube-shaped cracks with a fluffy white, cotton-like texture. Wood with dry rot may also have a strong, musty smell. 

Signs of other types of rot include wood that looks mushy or has black spots. The wood may crumble or give way when touched.

Algae doesn't directly contribute to wood rot, like mold, but it does create conditions that can lead to mold over time. You can stop wood rot in its early stages by fixing the moisture problem that led to it, treating the wood with a fungicide, filling weak spots with an epoxy wood filler, and sealing the wood against future moisture. Depending on the extent of the damage, already rotted wood may need to be replaced if it’s no longer structurally sound.
