Since incorporating in 1993 I’ve helped over 200 clients discover their personal refuge; ranging from four-acre country estates complete with a small lake, to patio gardens and native hideaways. We’ve worked together to interpret such styles as Japanese, Mediterranean, and English Cottage Garden to our climate and to the specific needs of the client and their site. We have used waterfalls, dry creek beds, paths, patios, structures, and accents to transform their yard into an inviting sanctuary.

Landscaping questions, answered by experts

Landscaping projects with high returns on investment include adding decks and patios, installing walkways, adding irrigation or outdoor lighting systems, and building outdoor kitchens. Even general landscape maintenance can be a good investment—a well-maintained lawn boosts your home’s curb appeal and can add value when it comes time to sell.

You can fill the holes weeds leave behind with soil or sand to avoid unsightly spots or tripping hazards. If you remove weeds from a grassy area, fill the hole with soil and grass seed, and water regularly to promote grass growth.

If you don’t like the way your empty drainage ditch looks, reach out to a local landscaping professional to discuss your options. They may be able to liven it up with plants, stones, bushes, or other decorative elements. You can also add your own landscaping, but you should first make sure that it won’t block your ditch or prevent it from operating effectively.

Multiple rules of thumb exist when discussing tree planting. When planting a tree, the best rule of thumb is to provide it with everything it needs to survive and thrive in its new environment. That may mean learning about the type of tree you're planting and studying the best methods of taking care of it before purchasing and planting.

In most cases, buying plants from a local greenhouse or nursery is well worth the investment, even though they tend to be a bit more expensive than those at a home improvement store. Employees at nurseries are usually well-versed in gardening and understand how the climate in your area affects different plants. They can help you make selections based on your skill level and time commitment to your landscaping, and they can provide detailed care instructions and advice to help keep your plants alive and diagnose and treat issues like pest infestation and illness.
