"I canâ t say enough about what a great job Daryl and his crew did. The job included replacement of 11â of basement foundation wall, demolition of brick front porch, and rebuilding of substructure for new porch. Communication was excellent. Estimates were reasonable as were charges for extras. Daryl listened to what we wanted and planned the scope accordingly. The crew were excellent workers, polite, and left the site as clean and safe as possible. Daryl anticipated many of our questions and worked well with the architect and engineer. Iâ ll also note that the admin Nicol did a great job keeping us updated on schedule. This is an often overlooked aspect of contractor-customer relations, but it makes such a difference to always have someone to contact who responds promptly. I highly recommend Secure Seismic for any kind of structural or seismic work and found them much better to deal with than some of the big national brands that work in this field."

Egress Windows questions, answered by experts

You install a window well 8 to 12 inches deeper than the base of the window sill. After filling the well with drainage rock, the well should sit 3 inches below the bottom of the window. The top of the window well should also be at least 3 inches higher than the surface-grade ground. The window well should be about 6 inches wider than the window opening.

Basements are generally required to have windows for your safety. At a minimum, windows should provide an egress in the event of a fire. But basement windows do more than offer a way out; basement windows also offer natural light and ventilation in an area of your home that is otherwise dark and musty.

Installing a window well costs anywhere from $500 to $1,500 or more. Adding an egress window and well runs about $3,900 on average. Adding a window well cover to the project can add $200 to $700. A well cover helps protect your egress windows from weather damage and keeps them clear of dirt, debris, and wildlife.

There are a range of egress window types available, including:

  • Single-hung: $100–$400

  • Double-hung: $250–$500

  • Horizontal/sliding: $150–$800

  • Casement: $200–$500

  • In-swing: $350–$700

When choosing a type of egress window, consider how you’d like to open it. For example, double-hung egress windows open from top to bottom and let plenty of fresh air in, whereas sliding windows slide open for easy access.

Yes, egress windows are grandfathered. However, this comes with some specifications. If you are remodeling a basement or adding a sleeping area, you’ll need to update the egress windows to be up to proper code. But, if you’re leaving your home as is, you do not have to adhere to these requirements.
