"Dakota Property services did a fantastic job across the board. Matthew is 100% customer service driven. He was professional and prompt on the initial quote. He called to give a specific time window when the crew would arrive. We met the crew at the appointment. They were courteous, accommodating, and professional. The work done was above and beyond expectations. They cleaned up excess debris around the neighbors. Crew leader checked in prior to departure to make sure all needs were met. Matthew called after the work was complete to ask if we were satisfied. The whole experience was a breath of fresh air. Our driveway, street, and decks are the cleanest in the neighborhood. This is our 2nd time using Dakota Property Services. We will be using them again next year!"

"Thomas communicated consistently throughout the project. You can tell he cares about the quality of his work and it shows. I will be hiring him for another project soon. We love our driveway and sidewalk. We live on a hill, so the driveway slopes in more than one direction. The rainwater ran in the direction he said it would and not into our garage. We love it."

"It was a pleasure working with the team at System Pavers to rebuild our driveway and we couldnâ t be happier with the results. Communication, coordination and follow-through were excellent and they kept to the schedule. Lidiana, the designer, was professional, knowledgeable, patient and flexible through multiple. The Project Manager, Michael, kept the project moving forward and gave us daily updates of the crewâ s progress. Moises and his crew worked efficiently and diligently, and really seemed to take pride in and enjoy their work. We will not hesitate in recommending the company to anyone and possibly using them for future work ourselves. They exceeded our expectations."

Asphalt Driveways questions, answered by experts

In most cases, you don’t need a permit to repave your driveway, although some exceptions exist. If you’re widening your driveway and plan on widening the apron as well, you’ll usually need a permit from the Department of Transportation in your area. This permit costs between $50 and $300 in most cases. Most municipalities will also require a certified and insured contractor do the work relating to the apron and curb cut. You can contact your building department or ask your paving company if you need a permit. Your driveway professional will usually pull the permit for you.

Costs range from $3 to $7 per square foot, depending on the area size and project scope.

With proper maintenance, asphalt milling driveways can last 30 years or more. Over time, you’ll need to regularly sealcoat your driveway. You should also have your driveway inspected every few years and make any repairs as soon as they are necessary; this will prolong the lifespan of your driveway.

If you’re looking for a similar, eco-friendly driveway material, you might consider one of these options:

  • Permeable pavement: This material is sometimes called “pervious” or “porous” pavement; it allows stormwater to drain into the subbase, eliminating storm drain costs.

  • Gravel: Consider paving your driveway with locally sourced gravel. By sourcing from a nearby source, your money won’t fund international shipping and will be invested back into your local community.

  • Natural stone pavers: Because natural stone pavers are made from organically-produced stone, there’s no new manufacturing required, limiting the environmental impact. In addition, water easily flows and drains through the gaps in the pavers.

While blacktop is a type of asphalt, the terms should not be used interchangeably, as not all asphalt qualifies as blacktop. The primary differences are in their composition, production process, and ideal applications. Blacktop contains more stone than other types of asphalt and is heated to a higher temperature during production—300°F or more—while hot-mix asphalt is heated to between 275°F and 300°F. The ratio of bitumen (a tar-like crude oil) is a key differentiator, though sources vary: some state blacktop has less bitumen, making it less durable, while others claim it has a higher ratio. Due to these differences, asphalt is generally more durable and better for high-traffic areas like highways and streets, while blacktop is more suitable for playgrounds and residential driveways. For a driveway project, it is best to consult a professional to determine the most appropriate material.
