"Originally I had hired Michael (Nov 2024) to do a bathroom remodel, in Sweet Home. He did the remodel and I thought he did an excellent job. However less than a year later and the tub and surround had to be redone. The surround was bubbling and literally falling off the wall. I reached out to Michael and he shared that apparently he used the wrong type of glue for the project. The type he used foamed out after application (hence the bubbling). I reached out to another contractor and inspector who came to take a look and it turns out that Michael had neglected to remove the plastic backing on the surround before gluing it to the wall, so the plastic backing was nicely glued, the surround, however was not. This not only caused the bubbling but it caused the bottom and sides of the surround to bulge out and areas where the water could get in. Michael has since ghosted me."

Stucco is very challenging to DIY, so it’s always best to leave the work to professional stucco contractors. The best exterior paint finish for stucco is a flat or low-gloss finish. A high-gloss finish will show imperfections in the stucco and give it a candy-coated look that many homeowners don’t like. The best types of exterior paint to use on stucco are acrylic, masonry, and elastomeric. However, acrylic is recommended because it is both durable and breathable.

Inspect annually for cracks, clean with a mild detergent, and reseal or repaint as needed to preserve appearance.

Mortar, or masonry mortar, is mainly used in joints and as parging for stone, brick, or cement construction. Stucco is primarily a surface material used as wall coverings. The easiest way to remove stucco is to use a circular saw with a diamond blade to cut small squares out, pry them off, and then cut the metal lath behind it with tin snips. It’s possible to do everything with a hammer and a crowbar, but it will take significantly longer and will wear you out more quickly. Plus, you’ll have a higher risk of damaging windows, hidden siding, and sheathing if you go the less precise route.
