"Installers Andrew, Austin, and Damon were prompt in arrival, fast and efficient in their work, cleaned up the work areas nicely, and were polite and courteous. I am very pleased with my tub to shower conversion and have recommended Jacuzzi to others. Thank you!"

"Amadou Lo responded quickly and professionally to our initial inquiry and continued to provide excellent communication throughout the project. The painting crew was thorough, neat, and quiet, and our house looks terrific! Door installation was a little tricky due to the age of the house, but everything was completed on time and on budget, and it's great to have new, well-insulated doors. After having had many experiences with contractors and home repair in three different houses, Lo's Contracting has earned its place as the first call when I need help!"

"Clearwater Construction services was a great company to work with. CJ was attentive and communicative which is hard to find in this business. Every person that came out was polite and cleaned up very well. The subs they used were top notch and I would use any of them again. They did what they said they would do and did it on time. We were so impressed how they cared for the house while working on it. They treated it like their own. I highly recommend them for any work they can do and I will use them again when needed."

"I had Paliy come to the house to describe a project of taking out a jetted tub and transform the space into a walk-in shower. They were very professional, on-time and within budget. The finished remodel was exactly what I had wanted."

"I had an old Canary yellow cast-iron tub, and replaced it for a beautiful new, safe, walk-in shower with some extra goodies. I felt the seamless one piece, water tight wall was a huge benefit and no caulking in the corners. The installer, Sang, was very enjoyable and did a fantastic job. What surprise me was, how much more money the other companies that offer acrylic were asking, it didn’t make sense. They are in their five stars."

Tub Shower Conversion questions, answered by experts

Medicare does not typically cover the cost of a walk-in shower. The federal health insurance program considers a walk-in shower to be a home alteration rather than a medical necessity, even though walk-in showers would assist many people who are eligible for Medicare. Medicare Advantage Plans and Medicaid are more likely to cover the cost of a walk-in shower. It’s not a guarantee, even with a letter from a physician, and if reimbursement is authorized, it usually comes after the individual pays the upfront installation fee.

Walk-in showers do require a little extra maintenance. The glass is prone to mildew and hard water buildup, so you’ll have to clean your glass shower door more frequently. They’re also harder to use than a tub for small children, and if you choose an open shower, you’ll get less privacy with a potential draft.

It is possible to install a two-in-one unit that has both a shower and a walk-in tub so you can still have both in smaller bathrooms or provide a showerhead for those in the household who prefer taking showers. You’ll hear these referred to as walk-in tub and shower combo units. Keep in mind that these combo units can take up more space than a standard shower or tub, and you’ll most likely need to hire a pro to install one.

There are three main types of shower valves: pressure-balancing, thermostatic, and diverter. Pressure-balancing and thermostatic valves are both considered mixing valves because they regulate water flow and temperature, but they do so in different ways. A pressure-balancing valve senses changes in water pressure, such as from a flushing toilet, and adjusts the incoming hot and cold water to maintain a consistent temperature; these typically use a single knob. A thermostatic valve uses a thermostat to precisely control the water temperature and requires a separate control to adjust the water volume. A diverter valve directs the flow of water from one fixture to another, such as switching from a tub faucet to a showerhead in a tub-shower combination.

How much room you need for a roll-in shower depends on your goals and the specifications of your shower. Most roll-in showers require at least 60-by-30 inches of space, and at least 60-by-60 inches is best for comfort and maneuverability. When planning the size of your roll-in shower, consider your needs for comfort and additional installations, such as benches and grab bars, that can make the space tighter.
