"Ryan was so helpful: knew exactly the fix that was needed-contacted me shortly after placing the project on Angi. Scheduling was easy as Ryan was able to work around the days/times I could be at home. Want to make special mention and say THANK YOU-Ryan was at my place a few minutes before the scheduled time. Ryan also took a look at a ceiling fan and helped understand the controls to it. Do you self a favor and contact Essential Electric first!"

"I hired Mr. Electric to change a fuse box to a breaker panel and update the electrical for the house. I talked to Jonathan who set up the appointments, sent email messages that included the picture of the technician. The technician, Nathanial was very efficient in getting the job done quickly."

"Great experience with this electrician! He did an excellent job replacing our kitchen light fixtures. Everything looks great, works perfectly, and they were professional, efficient, and clearly knew what they were doing. We especially appreciated that they came out on a Saturday, which was incredibly convenient. Highly recommend"

"Proactive Industries installed an outlet for my EV charger station. The work was excellent and the price was very reasonable. Unlike other companies I was not sold on services I do not need. I definitely recommend Proactive Industries. Straight forward, excellent work. Thank you again"

"This isn't a property that I own, it's quite an investment for me to choose such an expense, but Even though he knew I couldn't afford what he was offering and likely couldn't afford it from anyone else, Mr. McNatt was still extremely helpful with his direction and advice for me. So much so that I will be calling him for my next electrical need."

Electrical questions, answered by experts

The easiest and best way to power your outdoor lights is with the use of outdoor outlets. Most building codes now require exterior outlets in homes, so you likely already have outdoor outlets available to plug into. However, you can have these outlets installed if your space doesn’t currently include them.

Your outlet should be a ground-fault circuit interrupter (GFCI). These outlets will cut power off in the case of an electrical fire, keeping your home and family safe. Extension cords can also be GFCIs. A local electrician can replace older outlets with GFCIs, if necessary.

Smart light switches are designed to work with most traditional light fixtures and wiring. However, there are several compatibility factors to consider. Some smart switches require a neutral wire to function, which may not be present in older homes (typically built before 1985). If you plan to use a dimming feature, ensure your LED bulbs are specifically the dimmable type. Additionally, a stable Wi-Fi connection is necessary for remote control, though some models may use other standards like ZigBee, which would require a compatible smart home hub.

While you might not need to put lights and outlets on separate circuits, some local codes may require that you use separate circuits. Installing a separate circuit helps prevent total darkness in your home when your receptacle outlets take on too much power and blow a fuse or trip the breaker. It also costs less and is easier to simply install a new circuit.

There are various reasons why an electrical outlet can stop working. You might have to do some detective work to understand whether it’s a problem with the attached appliance, the outlet itself, or a faulty breaker. Sometimes, old age or loose wiring are to blame; other times, it can be as simple as an overloaded circuit tripping the system and cutting power. If you’re troubleshooting doesn’t solve the mystery or repairs, or replacements are required, it’s time to call in the pros.
