He was attentive to our vision & knowledgeable about what materials and tools were necessary. He worked efficiently and focused on the details that really add up when you’re working with a small, irregular space. "Curtis at Craftsman Interiors contacted me soon after putting my ceiling crack repair job on HomeAdvisor, and gave a very detailed response on his plan after I sent some photos. His quote was reasonable and competitive, and I was impressed with the number of excellent ratings, so we chose him for the work. Curtis and one associate cut out & replaced the damage securely on day 1 in a couple hours, including taping & mudding. On day 2 they returned to smooth over the dried patchwork & sprayed on the ceiling texture, in approx. 90 min. I want to be clear that they worked carefully and efficiently, not in any rush. The guys completely masked off and covered all surfaces prior to the work both days, and left the room totally clean at completion. Our repair now looks like nothing had ever happened, and we were completely pleased with the quality of work, being courteous, and working efficiently. I highly recommend Craftsman Interiors and would be glad to have Curtis do additional work for us as needed. He gets another 5-star rating from us !"

"This is the 2nd major project in our kitchen remodel where we've been fortunate enough to work with Alex. He is a master carpenter, and does impeccable work. His attention to detail and his vision for a flawless design and construction is why we're so glad to work with him. He built a custom kitchen island for us several years ago, and now he was able to create a matching custom cabinet wall storage/display unit that goes seamlessly with our island and kitchen cabinets. His ongoing communication with us during all steps of the design and build were really important to us. He does not take shortcuts and uses only quality material. I can't recommend him enough!"

Carpentry questions, answered by experts

New builds, remodels, and additions often necessitate professional framing expertise.

Yes, ceiling joists are typically load-bearing. However, their primary function is to support the weight of the ceiling and loads applied to it, like lighting fixtures and ceiling fans. They can also help support the roof, especially if they’re part of truss systems. Remember, the load-bearing capacity of ceiling joists depends on the material, size, and space between them.

The easiest way to tell if a wall is load bearing is to check if it’s an exterior wall or if it runs perpendicular to the joists above and below it (or parallel to beams). Exterior walls are almost always load-bearing, and walls that run under beams or parallel to them are also usually load-bearing. There are exceptions to these rules, and walls that don’t fit into these categories can still be load-bearing. If you’re unsure, hire a structural engineer to look at your home to assess whether or not the wall is structural.

Professionals ensure precise alignment and durability, critical for structural integrity.

Your local building code will list all the framing requirements for whatever type of structure you're building. Most exterior walls require spacing of 16 inches on-center, while many non-load-bearing interior walls only require 24 inches of spacing. However, there are also varying requirements depending on your construction material, so checking your municipality's rules is essential.
