Customers say: Quick response

"We called P&B about having hand rails made & installed for 4 short indoor stairs and the repair of existing pocket doors x 5. Mr. Z. came out the next day to survey what needed to be done. In 2 days afterwards he and his son came in the morning and completed all of the work, including an additional request to shorten a hall door, in just a few hours. They knew exactly how and what to do, worked well together, were neat and were very personable. All of the work done exceeded our expectations. We hope they are available for other future projects we may need done."

"Very professional company and crew! Restored and repaired my second story deck in under projected time and at a very reasonable cost. Craftsmanship is excellent. Would hire them for other projects."

Carpentry questions, answered by experts

Most of the time, you’ll want to use screws on your subfloor rather than nails. Nails can actually weaken plywood, whereas screws can easily penetrate without damage. They also form a more secure connection because of their shape, preventing squeaky floors and tightly holding the subfloor in place. That said, some contractors do prefer nails depending on the type of floor covering because they allow for more flexibility.

You should avoid drilling or cutting into load-bearing beams because removing material will weaken it and increase the risk of structural damage or even collapse. If you do need to drill into a load-bearing beam, speak with a structural engineer first to discuss where it’s safest to drill and the width and depth of the bit that’s safe to use.

Costs depend on furniture type, size, complexity, and whether additional modifications are needed.

Joists do distribute their load to beams, but they don’t sit on top of the beams. Instead, home builders nail or screw the joists directly to the beams such that the end of the joist butts up against the edge of the beam. Beams can sit on other beams for support, but you’ll never see a joist sitting on top of a beam or another joist.

Yes, professionals can install new frames, trim, and threshold adjustments for a complete finish.
