"We actually hired JLS to do multiple projects: expand our laundry room (removal of a load bearing wall was required), repair a cracked joist in the attic space over our garage, and install a vented range hood to replace our old recirculating hood. From the first estimate, to the completion, we could not be more pleased. The owner is very conscientious and wants to ensure that each step of the job is completed to the highest standards. Communication was outstanding and there were zero costly "surprises". He and the gentleman that worked for him were both very friendly. They went above and beyond to keep the construction mess to a minimum and performed a thorough clean-up at the end of every workday. For all of the work that we had done, we felt that the price was quite fair and we will not hesitate to call JLS for future projects that are outside of our comfort zone or time constraints!"

"This gentleman is in business for himself and he did an outstanding job. His work was excellent and he was prompt. This fence repair was an emergency for me and he was able to respond the very first day. I will greatly recommend him for type of walk a person could need."

"I recently hired Nicole for home organization services, and I couldn't be happier with the results. The consultant was extremely professional and communicated effectively throughout the process. She had a keen eye for decluttering and organizing spaces, making my home feel more spacious and functional. The consultant completed the project in a timely manner, and I was impressed by their attention to detail. Additionally, they provided me with valuable tips and strategies to maintain an organized home long-term. I highly recommend The Organization Consultant for anyone looking to transform their living space!"

"I was amazed how much of a difference they made with my 1950â s style closet. It is so tiny and the way they were able to come up with a whole new system was amazing. I had been living out of 3 different closets and they found a way TJ make one work with everything I need. The best part is they made it so simple and 6 months later I am able to keep it as organized as it was when they did it."

Closets questions, answered by experts

You may need a building permit to add a closet, depending on the size and kind of work required to install it. The most likely scenario requiring a permit involves changing the structure of the house and performing electrical work for closet lighting. A permit can cost between $100 and $450. If you’re installing a smaller reach-in closet, a permit may not be required, but always check with your local municipality and consult a closet designer or builder.

Fortunately, there are no hard and fast rules or regulations regarding the height of closet shelving. However, the typical height for a single closet shelf with a hanging bar is 70 inches from the floor. For a double-hanging system, use 84 to 85 inches from the floor for the top one and 42 inches for the lower.

On average, building a custom or built-in closet costs around $2,100. However, the total price can range from as little as $500 for a simple DIY project to $6,000 or more for a large, high-end custom closet. Most projects typically fall between $1,500 and $5,000.

The final cost depends on several factors, including the closet's size, type, materials, and features. Here is a general cost breakdown by closet type:

  • Reach-in closet: $500 to $1,500

  • Walk-in closet: $750 to $5,000

  • Wardrobe: $2,000 to $6,000 or more

Choosing a prefabricated closet system is generally less expensive than a fully custom build. The scope of design and construction services will also significantly impact the price.

Yes, books are typically heavier than clothes, unless you have a collection exclusively of paperbacks or comic books. That’s why packing lots of books warrants careful planning and consideration. Consider packing up your reading collection first to determine whether you need to downsize it before loading it into your moving truck.

Whether it’s less expensive to build or buy a closet depends on both the type of closet and whether or not you’d be constructing it yourself. The cost of custom closets built by a pro ranges from $1,300 to $3,800, but you may be able to DIY it for as little as $400. By contrast, prefabricated options go as low as $200 and up to $3,000, so it’s almost always less expensive to go this route.
