Customers say: Quick response

"I have called on Ed Humes Locksmith Service several times for work on our house. I purchased cabinet hardware from them at comparable internet prices. They installed new locks on our sunroom doors. I called on them recently to install new locks and handsets on our exterior doors and also replace a few interior door handsets. We are now in the process of installing all new handsets on the rest of our interior doors. The Humeses sell top-of-the-line Emtek products as well as lower-priced quality hardware. This is largely a husband-wife team business, which is kinda wonderful these days. Plus, I like to support local Edmond businesses, especially ones that do a great job. Sonya and Tom Humes (Ed’s son) are both personable and professional. They are also fast and efficient. I am amazed at how nicely our new door handles turn, deadbolts open and close smoothly, and doors close properly. You can count on Tom and Sonya to clean up after themselves, too, after drilling and cutting deadbolt holes and setting locks. When they schedule you, on the day of the appointment window—as most reputable in-home service folks do—they call you 30 minutes beforehand to confirm their ETA. I understand that they also donate hardware to Habitat for Humanity. I am pleased with the quality and service of Humes Locksmith Service. I highly recommend this company."

"I called Alarm Protection Group AFTER my office was burglarized. Now I feel SAFE. William is great to work with. He's neat and tidy, prompt, presentable - not a butt-crack type of guy, and he doesn't leave a mess in his wake. He's also knowledgeable about the equipment and only uses high-quality products."

"Walter and Glen at Protect Your Home Group with ADT are the best people to talk to in terms of security alarm. Being a locksmith myself I know how important it is to deal with the right people. I referred a lot of customers to them and so far they are happy with their service. I myself got one for my house. Thank you for a consistent service and great deal."

Locksmiths questions, answered by experts

Rekeying door locks yourself costs a fraction of what you would expect to pay a locksmith. On average, it costs between $50 to $100 to hire a local locksmith to rekey your house, though labor costs may vary based on where you live. For a DIY solution, you can expect to spend $11 to $25 on a rekeying kit.

Yes, as long as it’s thick enough for the deadbolt. Most interior hollow core doors are at least 1 1/2-inches thick, which is usually the minimum requirement for a deadbolt. You’ll want to find the lock block first before installing. Also, most hollow doors require additional reinforcement for locks, such as a reinforcement plate or plywood block.

Keyless locks are often considered safer since they’re protected by passcodes instead of a physical key, making it harder to be picked. However, they are not infallible. And like all electronic devices, outdated models are more prone to problems and safety concerns. If you’ve experienced multiple lockouts in the past year, or your lock is responding slower than usual after you key in the passcode, it might be time to upgrade to a newer one. Even if your lock is working fine, you should still change your access code at least twice a year.

Whether or not keyless door locks are safe and trustworthy depends on the visibility of the programming code—and a trespasser’s determination. Even if you carefully guard entry and programming codes, those trying to break in may be able to crack open the lock’s faceplate with a screwdriver and change the codes. The same goes for manual models.

Some find smart locks the safest option because it’s harder to manipulate codes without access to your phone. But it’s possible to get hacked even then. Consider installing an extended security system, like door and window alarms or surveillance cameras, to enhance security.

Rekeying your own locks is a low-cost task that prevents you from having to replace the locks themselves completely. The first couple of times you rekey a lock may be challenging because this is an intermediate DIY task. You can purchase a rekey kit from most hardware stores, but make sure you’re buying the kit from the brand of lock in your home that you’re going to rekey.
