"Months after reroofing, I found both water heater exhaust vents completely dislodged, pumping CO gas into my attic—a life-threatening hazard Simon later admitted knowing about yet failed to disclose. We allowed him to "repair" it, then he conveniently omitted photos of the botched repair when trying to close the permit with the city. After the city confronted him about missing photos, he submitted one, omitting the worst one. This prompted permitting to want to see it in person, and they said it's UNSAFE. We also found a vent misaligned, uncaulked bolts+nails, unpainted caulk visible from street, dish cable left flapping in the wind, and 4 vents LEAKING after he brushed off complaints of light showing through. No ownership, just deflection. He also kept asking that I get on the roof with him. We started with trust/patience until he showed disregard for my family's safety, disregard for our concerns, and hiding issues from the city. We paid $25k for the pleasure of this experience."

When the temps drop, sometimes you need to thaw a lock to regain access. Options include warming the key with warm water, applying a de-icing spray, or using a hair dryer on low heat. Avoid using boiling water to prevent damage. To prevent future freezing, consider installing a cover or shield over the lock to keep water and ice out. Remember to be patient and gentle during thawing to avoid damaging the lock or key. If all else fails, consult a professional locksmith.

You may be able to get a broken key out of a lock by yourself, depending on the situation. If a portion of the key is still protruding from your lock, try lubricating the keyway and using pliers or even a bobby pin to pull the key out of the hole. If you have jigsaw blades handy, you can also try using those to grab onto the stuck key and pull it out. 

But, if neither option works or you can’t reach the key, your only option is to call a locksmith for help. 

Newer, electric-powered door locks generally have a life span of five years or less. That’s thanks, in large part, to a phenomenon called planned obsolescence, in which products are programmed to need replacing after a certain amount of time. That’s also why older, manual, push-key locksets can last up to 30 years with regular cleanings and maintenance. When it does come time for a new set-up, know that the cost to change locks ranges from $130 to $500 on average.

There’s no set time limit for when you should replace your locks, but there are several indicators that it’s time to swap them. If you’re moving into a new home or have a roommate moving out, it’s smart to change the locks. If you experience a break-in or other crime, you should change it then too, or if you ever lose your keys. Eventually, locks can wear out, so it’s ideal to replace them after several years of use or one of these circumstances occurs.

If you’re having an issue turning the key inside a lock, chances are there is dust or dirt buildup within the cylinder. The easiest solution is applying a dry lubricant to the lock, which loosens the dirt buildup. You may need to turn the key a few times for it to work properly again.
