While there is a lot of debate about whether boiling water is strong enough to kill tree roots, it is not best to remove the roots from large, old trees. You may be able to weaken young roots enough to remove them manually, but boiling water will likely not do the trick for large root systems.

We don’t recommend DIY tree trimming for a few different reasons. First, the tools required to trim a tree can be costly, up to $1,100 or more, for the ladders and specialized saws needed. 

Safety is another concern, especially when working with more mature trees. As a guideline, you should only DIY tree trimming when branches are less than two inches in diameter. Any more, and the safety risk becomes too high, which could lead to catastrophe. For this job, it’s safest to let a tree-trimming professional assess the work needed.

The best time to trim trees is in late fall through winter when the tree has slowed its growing for the year. Cold weather stops insects and fungal growth from attacking a new tree wound. Summer and fall are considered the worst times to trim trees, but it’s permissible in certain scenarios, such as tree disease, damaged branches, or small, aesthetic cuts.

Absolutely. These steps are significantly easier, too, especially when it comes to preserving the root ball and moving the palm tree. However, you will want to make sure the tree has plenty of fertilizer to establish itself and start growing. Supports may also be more important, as it can take extra time for a potted palm to spread out its roots. It is possible for you to cut down your own tree, but only take this project on if it’s a small tree and you’re experienced handling a chainsaw. If you need to use a ladder to cut down the tree or tree limbs, it’s too large (and dangerous) for you to remove yourself. 

Hire a pro instead who can safely remove the tree without injury to you, themselves, or your home. Either way, look into tree removal regulations for the state you live in before having a tree removed to ensure it’s not a historic tree or protected by your city.
