"I got 2 quotes thru "Angi" to have a 12 X 25 foot porch with ramp made. The quote from Handyman419,LLC was less expensive, but that alone was not the deciding factor. The owner, Mark Clark was reassuring with his calm confidence, experience and knowledge base-I appreciated these things as I have never hired anyone to build anything for me. Mark has a small but skilled crew who are very conscientious and respectful of the owners wishes and concerns. Brian, Jonah, Michelle and Mark were all pleasant people to be around and experienced at what they do-which was building a safe and well constructed porch. They are very conscious of details and precise. I am very happy with my beautiful porch! I love the composite decking material which was a perfect match to my house, it has such a nice finished look and is safe for my husband to walk on. I highly recommend working with Handyman419 LLC,they are good people who take care of their customers and do skilled work at a reasonable price."

"Audrea did a great job finding the perfect organizers for our closets in our new home. Sean installed them on the days we had asked for (he even came a day early) and they are beautiful! We are happy with their services. We have one more closet that they need to install once the tile is installed."

Carpentry questions, answered by experts

Most Cape Cod houses are two stories tall at the peak, although they’re considered one-and-a-half stories tall because the steep roof pitch cuts off a portion of the living space on the second story. Unless you raise the roof on your Cape Cod house to add a dormer, the interior rooms upstairs will lose some usable living space to the sloped ceilings.

By careful planning and reinforcement to maintain structural integrity.

Modern brick houses are really stick-built homes with a brick facade for aesthetic purposes only, so most have framing. With genuine brick construction, most homeowners install furring strips over the interior of the brick and then install drywall over those strips to cover the brick wall, so they don’t have traditional framing.

When deciding if you should use 2x6 or 2x8 deck joists, consider the size of the deck, joist spacing, and materials. Larger decks, larger-spaced joists, and weaker wood all require more support, meaning they need larger joists. For example, 2x8 redwood joists spaced 16 inches apart can only safely span up to 10 feet and 7 inches. On the other hand, 2x10 southern pine joists spaced 12 inches apart can be as big as 16 feet and 2 inches. If you aren’t sure what size joist is best for your project, speak with your deck builder.

In framing, studs are placed at 16-inch intervals to coincide with the typical spacing of wall materials such as drywall or plywood. This spacing is called "on-center" and is necessary for maintaining structural stability and efficient use of materials. The 16-inch spacing also helps to distribute the weight evenly across the building's structure. For those looking to cut material costs and improve energy efficiency, 24-inch stud spacing can be employed through a method called "advanced framing". This requires careful planning and adherence to local building codes to ensure structural integrity.
