Look for signs of advancing wear and tear. Crumbling wood, rusted hardware, or increasingly misaligned doors indicate that you should begin considering a replacement. Although the replacement price might seem high, replacing the doors as soon as you notice these issues is best. Letting your existing doors continue to deteriorate can result in costly damage to your basement and belongings.

If part of the key is protruding out of the lock, you can use a pair of needle-nosed pliers or tweezers to gently turn the key in the lock to open the door. If the key is fully inserted into the lock, you may also be able to use a key extractor to help turn the key into the unlocked position. 

But if the key breaks off halfway into the lock or you simply can’t reach it to help engage the unlocking mechanisms, you should probably call a professional.

Like many common door problems, warping can be caused by improper installation. When a door isn't installed correctly, there's a good chance that the poor seal is allowing moisture and drafts to seep through. When this happens, humidity will build up in the wood until it swells and warps.

First, determine what is causing the issue. If the doorframe was improperly installed without a consistent width from top to bottom, you’ll need to contact a door installer to install a new doorframe. If loose or missing screws are causing the issue, you can fix the problem with a few turns of a screwdriver. Other problems require removing the door and supporting it in the proper place with shims while you reinstall it.
