"Had Betts Structural Engineering come and look at the foundation of a house we were in contract on. Josh came out and was professional and informative. He informed us the foundation was failing and explained what needed to be done. He throughly explained everything and told us how we could do it ourselves for much cheaper than a contractor could do it. In the end he saved us from a long and expensive process if we proceeded with the house."

"Brian and his group at Kian Architecture have been a reliable and trusted partner on building projects for the past 3 years. Our relationship started with a high-end residential, new construction building in Miami where a tight timeline, code compliance obstacles, and complex design strategies were all in play; Brian and his team nailed it. I hope to continue working with Kian and refer them regularly for commercial/residential projects because I'm sure my clients are going to get a high quality experience and a firm that executes reliably."

"Used Trino for 2 separate houses. Good work--Trino has solutions to issues (fixing structure of porch of house from underneath whereas other crews were focused only on fixing top deck). Good quality painting of exterior of houses. Installed new handrail on front porch. Thanks"

Structural Engineering questions, answered by experts

Provides expert analysis, ensuring safety and compliance with building codes.

According to the Earthquake Country Alliance—a public and private alliance in California that works to improve earthquake and tsunami readiness—reports that unreinforced masonry, such as stone, bricks, and hollow clay tiles, is more susceptible to earthquake damage. The mortar between bricks isn’t as stable as other building materials and methods.

In many areas, advice from a structural engineer or an architect will be required by your building department before you can remove a wall, but even if it’s not necessary, it’s a good idea. Accidentally removing a load-bearing wall—even if a general contractor advises that it’s safe—can cause major structural damage, putting you and your family at risk and potentially costing thousands or tens of thousands of dollars in property damage.

Signs of structural damage include foundation cracks, roof leaks, bouncy floors, crumbling concrete, and cracked or leaning chimneys. Structural damage can make itself apparent in various ways, and sometimes, there may not be obvious signs. Inspect your foundation and roof annually to stay ahead of potentially serious structural problems.

The primary reason homes have crawl spaces is so the foundation can reach down below the frost line to avoid dangerous soil movement and structural damage when the ground freezes. They’re more popular in colder climates where the ground freezes down to a few feet, and slabs are most popular in warmer areas where there is no frost line. Crawl spaces also provide a space for utility lines to run where they’re at less of a risk of freezing.
