"I purchased a 160 year old home 2.5 years ago. It has 3 fireplaces. Mid Valley just repaired the one in my living room and they did a fantastic job. The hearth needed to be replaced and they were able to save the old brick to use on the top so that it still looks original to the fireplace. They also lined the chimney with a new stainless steel flue and repaired the fire box. I put a fire in it on Saturday night and it was wonderful. I will definitely be hiring these guys to repair my other fireplace, as well as for general masonry work. I highly recommend their services."

"I hired Doug's Homes Services to replace a rim joist under our patio door that had water and termite damage. Once they removed the door, they realized that other wood needed replaced as well. They worked on it until everything was replaced and reinstalled the patio door. They kept me updated during the job. Doug charged a reasonable rate, and I was very impressed with their work. "Have had Tri-State do several projects. All have been done quickly and well. Latest was cutting an egress window into a concrete foundation for a lower level walkout. Tri-state had to coordinate several employees to do the job and it turned out great! Along the way they picked up a few smaller jobs and handled equally well. Whether you’re installing brick siding over a traditionally-framed home or you’re using genuine brick construction to build, the biggest downside of a brick house is the higher cost you’ll pay for the materials and labor. Real brick construction also means your home build will take longer, as it’s more time-consuming to construct brick walls than it is to frame out your home.

When painting brick, each application method has distinct advantages and disadvantages. Spraying is significantly faster but may not penetrate deeply beyond the surface layer. Rolling is effective for working paint into the brick's texture but can be less effective on mortar joints. If you opt for a roller, choose a thick nap of at least a half-inch to ensure paint gets into all the crevices for even coverage. Using a brush is generally not recommended as it is very time-consuming and provides poor surface penetration. Ultimately, a combination of spraying followed by back-rolling is often the best strategy for a durable and even finish.

Cobblestone can be made from many different types of stones but the most common ones, by far, are granite, basalt, limestone, and sandstone.  If you are laying a brick paver patio or other such project, the medium is different. It’s rare, but cobblestone can also be made from marble, slate, jasper, and other types of rock. Technically, you can make cobblestone from almost any type of rock, but if it is weather-resistant and stands the test of time is another question entirely.

  • Lintels: Look for cracks, holes, displacement, or corrosion

  • Mortar: Check to see if the mortar is old and crumbling, in need of repointing, or new. Also check to see if the mortar has a professional finish.

  • Walls: Check along each side of the house. If a wall is bowing outward, this indicates a severe issue such as foundation damage or that the walls are ready to fall.

  • Cracks: If there are stair step cracks in the brickwork, this indicates an unstable foundation.

Yes, but used or reclaimed bricks can be more brittle, cracked, or uneven than new bricks, so they’re harder to cut cleanly by hand. For that reason, you should take extra care when scoring and striking, and expect a higher chance of breakage. If a brick feels especially fragile, score deeper before attempting to split it.
