Small jobs welcome

"Very professional. He responded quickly with a call. Came out to review job, sent a very detailed estimate. Called, and showed up when he said he would. Did a great job, of cleaning deck, repaired and replaced some steps, then painted the deck. Came back a couple days later, returned everything back on the deck. Very polite!!! I would highly recommend him."

"We have been flipping houses for almost 10 years and have used several different painting companies and this one is by far the best we have used! The owner, Adam, had great communication throughout the entire process and his crew went above and beyond to give us an incredible finished product. They cleaned up extremely great as well. We would HIGHLY recommend Garringer painting to anyone!"

"Jessie Jent, the owner, was very prompt in meeting with us on the initial consultation. Upon first impression we were skeptical about his ability to complete a large job of this scope to our satisfaction.   However, the reviews helped us sway our decision to finally go with Jent's Handyman Service.  After the completion of the reface of the fireplace, we were very impressed with the speed and quality of his work and from that point on we were sold on his ability to complete the project to our satisfaction.  Once Jessie started on the actual kitchen remodel phase of the job, he arrived every day at the agreed  time for two weeks until every aspect of the job was completed short of the tile work which had to wait on the countertop installation.  That portion of the job was completed within a timely manner, shortly after the countertop installers put in the countertops.  Of note here, the countertop installers commented on the excellent plumb and levelness of the cabinet installation by Jent's crew.  Also, it needs to be mentioned that Jessie was gracious enough to install our old countertop and sink until the new sink and countertop arrived allowing us to use our kitchen without delay and at no additional cost.  We are very pleased with the overall value we received for our money, Jent's provided very good workmanship, good communication, timely completion of work and a great overall experience that we would not hesitate to do again.

Deck Cleaning questions, answered by experts

When deciding if you should use 2x6 or 2x8 deck joists, consider the size of the deck, joist spacing, and materials. Larger decks, larger-spaced joists, and weaker wood all require more support, meaning they need larger joists. For example, 2x8 redwood joists spaced 16 inches apart can only safely span up to 10 feet and 7 inches. On the other hand, 2x10 southern pine joists spaced 12 inches apart can be as big as 16 feet and 2 inches. If you aren’t sure what size joist is best for your project, speak with your deck builder.

Pressure-treated wood contains preservatives that give the material internal protection from rot and pests. Untreated lumber won’t last more than a few years unless you choose a more expensive wood, like cedar, that naturally stands up well to moisture. Composite decking can outlast wood but is more expensive and doesn’t look as natural. Keep in mind that you’ll need to seal any exterior wood product to protect it from the elements and other forms of external damage.

Both deck footings and deck posts help prop up your deck. However, footings are the bottommost parts of a deck that touch the ground. They’re usually made of concrete. Posts are pieces of wood that attach to the top of the footings with brackets. They run upwards and connect to the underside of your deck to support its weight.

Both composite and PVC decking are excellent alternatives to wood. However, while composite is moderately priced and lasts around 30 years, PVC costs more and lasts longer. PVC is also more durable, though both materials are more durable than wood decking. Ultimately, the choice between composite and PVC decking will come down to your budget and preferences.

Ideally, a gate should be able to swing both in and out. However, if it can only open in one direction, it is generally best for it to swing inward. This is often the safest option, especially for deck gates near steps, as you'll want the gate to swing away from the stairs. An inward swing also prevents the gate from opening into a public space, like a sidewalk, and can be more convenient when carrying heavy items like a wheelbarrow into a garden.

There are exceptions, however. The layout of your property may require a different approach. For example, if your property is on a slope, the gate may not be able to swing inward. You should also ensure the gate can open fully without colliding with any objects or blocking access to other areas. For a backyard garden gate where public access isn't a concern, the direction it swings is largely a matter of personal preference. Finally, always check your local building codes, as they may have specific requirements for which way a gate must swing.
