"We cannot say enough great things about Tristate Complete Home Repair! We just finished up a partial renovation of the interior of our Hoosier Homestead farmhouse, and Tristate did a fabulous job! The house had spent decades under the care of our aging parents, so it needed a lot of careful attention to update nearly everything without compromising the unique historical beauty of the house. Owner Tim of Tristate brought decades of renovation experience to our project, leading a crew of workers representing all the trades. This meant fewer delays and mistakes on our project. No regrets here. We look forward to future work from Tristate!"

Small jobs welcome

"Very professional. He responded quickly with a call. Came out to review job, sent a very detailed estimate. Called, and showed up when he said he would. Did a great job, of cleaning deck, repaired and replaced some steps, then painted the deck. Came back a couple days later, returned everything back on the deck. Very polite!!! I would highly recommend him."

"They did amazing. They made sure they cleaned up their mess. I have hired other companies in the past and they have left a mess. My deck is power washed, new stain and new lighting ran and all flower beds are nice. Very please with them and will call them back for any other projects."

"Matt was very prompt in responding to my request via Angi, unlike 3 other companies I was interested in. My project had a couple "wrinkles" (I.e. non-standard requirements) along the way, but the fellows were quick to adapt. The work was carried out quickly and on time. Once my astronomical observatory is complete and installed on the deck, I plan to send the team some photos of the project they were so instrumental in completing."

"I purchased most of the materials myself. His work was very good. At first I was a little hesitant but he came out and gave me a estimate. Everything he did turned out excellent. He also made some suggestion some things that he saw. He kept my budget in mind. He ran everything by me before hand. I was overall satisfied."

Deck Maintenance questions, answered by experts

DIY staining or painting is manageable with proper preparation, including safety measures, necessary tools, and adherence to safe weather conditions for application.

Applying too much sealer to a deck might seem like extra protection, but it can cause more harm than good. Wood is a porous material with a limited capacity to absorb liquids. When you go overboard with sealer, the excess can't soak in and instead forms a film on the surface. This leftover layer is prone to peeling, cracking, and trapping moisture, ultimately defeating the purpose of sealing in the first place.

Whether you need a permit depends on the deck design and local regulations. Most areas mandate a building permit if the deck is over a specific height or if it's attached to a pre-existing structure. Shorter, freestanding decks may not require a permit, but you should check with local zoning ordinances and your homeowners association for specifics.

In many areas, a floating deck that isn’t connected to your home and stays under 200 square feet and below 30 inches in height may not need a permit. These freestanding structures are often considered low-risk, which can simplify the building process. However, building codes vary greatly based on location. Before investing in any home improvement project, check with your local permitting office for deck-building guidelines.

Composite decking may never warp, or it may warp quickly. Several factors can influence the rate of warping, including the material's quality, installation method, and installation location. Generally speaking, high-quality materials that have been installed properly are drastically less prone to warping.
