"In the end he did a good job. He returned my calls when I had questions or concerns. But he could improve his communication skills. For example, after the job started, I came home on a Friday to find a Dumpster parked in the middle of my driveway so I was unable to pull in all the way. I did not expect that to happen. I called him and left a message about it. He called me back and said that's normal, to leave a Dumpster in the driveway after the job started. But since I have never had a roof done, how would I know that? He should let the customer know what to expect.
  Also, there was some confusion over whether the new roof was inspected by the city's Building Department, as required. In fact I don't believe it was. I found this out only after calling the Building Department and asking if they had inspected the roof. The Building Department said no. The contractor insisted he had the OK from someone in the Building Department and would have that person call me, but that never happened, and that got me very concerned and suspicious. The contractor said he was trying to get the job done quickly because he started late in the season and snow was on the way, which I appreciate. But he should have left the customer know what was happening -- again, bad communication.
  Eventually, the building commissioner himself came over with the contractor to inspect part of the roof and the building commissioner gave the thumbs up on the job. The roof has held up fine after heavy snow and hard rain, so I have no reason to believe there is a problem.
  One more thing -- I also wanted the contractor to repair the chimney, but the subcontractor never came, partly due to the weather. The contractor said he would do the chimney when the weather got nice, but I haven't heard from him. He didn't charge me for the chimney, just the roof.
  Despite these problems, his subcontractor seems to have done a good job on the roof and at a good price.
