We are a small construction firm with 3-4 carpenters. The only subs we use are mechanical contractors on large projects. Depending on the job, weekly payments are preferred as progress is being made. We work on one project at a time.

"I posted an F review here from about 1-1/2 years ago. Last week my kitchen sink fell into the cabinet below. I called my builder who immediately contacted Cleveland Granite. At least they did send someone out the next day. They had to send a former installer (who now works for them in a different capacity) because the regular installers were booked up that day. Thank goodness!! He and his new young installer were fantastic!! The sink had been installed improperly and he knew exactly what to do and how to fix it correctly (even though it was very difficult to do with the countertop and the plumbing already in place). I would still never hire Cleveland Granite again for any job, but at least this one experience turned out great!"

Marble and Granite questions, answered by experts

Tiling over your existing backsplash is possible with the right materials and preparation. To do this, the existing backsplash must be clean and free of damage. If you’re installing the new tiles with thinset mortar, the thinset will fill in the existing grout lines as you go, so there won’t be any low spots. If you’re installing a peel and stick tile backsplash, you’ll need to add grout to the existing grout lines first to create a level surface.

Cutting stone comes with a number of safety hazards. First and foremost, if you’re not comfortable with the equipment required to cut stone, including blades and grinders, you could easily injure yourself. The heavy machinery also poses a risk to your ears if you don’t wear proper ear protection; similarly, you need to wear eye protection to keep debris from irritating your eyes.

However, the biggest risk from cutting stone comes from the stone dust. When breathed in, stone dust can be a huge hazard to your lungs. Always wear a face mask when cutting stone to prevent inhaling stone dust, and thoroughly clean the work area when you are finished.

To avoid injury, we recommend hiring a stone-cutting professional, rather than attempting this job yourself.

Installing a marble backsplash costs about $2,200 on average, ranging from $600 to $6,000, depending on the variety of marble and the labor costs to prep and install. Common types of marble used for backsplashes include:

  • Makrana: $12 per square foot

  • Pink: $25 per square foot

  • Carrara: $40 per square foot

  • Statuatrio: $50 per square foot

  • Cultured: $65 per square foot

  • Travertine: $75 per square foot

  • Danby: $80 per square foot

  • Calacatta: $180 per square foot

Installation costs range from $10 to $50 per square foot, depending on stone type, project complexity, and labor.

Most professional shower tile installations take between six and eight hours, depending on the size and complexity. Most projects get completed in a single workday. DIY-ing the project takes around three to four days or roughly 16 hours. However, this will vary based on the skill level of the person completing the work.
