"The Zimmer estimator was polite, friendly, and did a great job of explaining everything. Their selection of gates is somewhat limited due to shipping and Covid-related delays; not their fault. The experience was positive throughout."

"Following Steps has been handling weekly lawn mowing for my mom's and my homes now for two months. The young men who work for the company are very respectful of the properties in terms of handling the equipment with care and being conscientious of the houses, cars, and various yard plants. They always close the gates when leaving. They are dependable, reasonably priced and pleasant. This all reflects well on the management and longevity of this fine company."

"I couldn't be happier wth Skip and his crew. They such a good job. My 15 yr old fence looks better than it did when it was brand new. Everything is even and lined up and I can actually open and close both gates. These guys are really hard workers and know what they are doing. This turned out way better than I ever hoped. I would not hesitate to recommend them to anyone.

"When they started the project, the concrete which was already cracked, seemed to be coming up pretty well.  When that was removed, they found a lot more gravel under the concrete than they anticipated so it was an additional time and expense to remove that.  The garage sill had to be repoured and they began installing the correct type of gravel and pounding down the base.  Being  April, it rained a lot in there and it slowed the progress as you can imagine.  Can't do much about the weather.  I also had some blocks on my garage foundation that were loose so they refilled the mortar to stabilize the foundation. This is when we found that the gutter drain pipes were broken and clogged.  They installed new piping and we cleaned out the remaining pipes before installing the pavers.  By having the "O" in the middle, it made for a lot more cuts and took some additional time but it was worth it.  They sealed the driveway and finally they installed the sod around the edges.  Along the way Jake had to deal with a major personal issue but handled it very well.  Jake and his crew did a very good job and handled all the little things that came up very professionally.  I don't know of any other contractor who would have worked with me the way they did.  In my opinion, they provided me with a great finished product and I would use them in the future.

"iShowed up to do the work when promised. My gate was secured to keep my dog in after the work was completed. Now, that was important because the last company to have access to yard left gate open and dog was missing for 3 hours. I am satisified with the job, will use again and do recommend.

"He came out when he said he was going to. He gave me a decent price and a discount because I'm an Angie's List member. He grabbed my snow shovel to dig my car out so that he wouldn't have to get too close with his equipment. He went above and beyond what he needed to. I have a hundred foot driveway and he got the extra snow on the sides as well and around the mailbox."

"Luis at LP Fencing was fantastic. He texted me back same day I posted job on Angi. He came out a couple days later and immediately was prepared with tools to fix it same day. Wood gate works better than when it was initially installed. Will definitely be reaching out to Luis for our next gate, decking, drywall, or painting needs."

Driveway Gates questions, answered by experts

Yes, most electric and automatic gates can be opened manually. They are equipped with a manual override or release mechanism that detaches the motor from the gate, allowing it to be moved by hand. This feature is essential during power outages or other emergencies.

To activate the manual override, you will typically need a specific key or tool. In some cases, you may also need a screwdriver to remove a cover to access the release mechanism. The use of a key is a common security measure to prevent unauthorized individuals from manually opening the gate.

Because every model is different, it is highly recommended to consult your gate's user manual to familiarize yourself with the specific procedure before you need to use it. Keep any necessary keys or tools in an accessible location. Be aware that automatic gates can be very heavy, so opening and closing them manually may be difficult.

In North America, electric gates are also subject to the UL 325 Standard for Safety, which includes provisions to allow emergency responders to access the property.

When making this decision, three essential factors come into play. For budget-conscious individuals, swing gates are the more economical choice. Despite the possibility of both gate types having similar dimensions, many types of sliding gates demand a more intricate opening mechanism and additional components, requiring electrical work for motors and signaling remotes, resulting in higher installation costs.

Your wooden gate post hole should be a third to a half of the height of the post. Also, note that the diameter of the post hole should be three times the diameter of the post. You should set the post in concrete to ensure a long-lasting and durable post that will withstand the test of time.

A gate shouldn’t be higher or lower than the fence it's attached to. If the gate is lower than the fence, it encourages strangers to peek at your property. If the gate is higher than the fence, it just looks weird. Gates allow for increased security and aesthetics, so ensure the gate rests at the same height as the fence.

Installing a gate on your property is often a worthwhile investment, despite the initial expense. Gates enhance your home's curb appeal and can increase its property value, making them more attractive to potential homebuyers. They provide significant security benefits by keeping out unwanted guests and increasing privacy for your household. Additionally, a gate can help keep children and pets safely contained in your yard.

For driveway gates, automatic versions are particularly convenient and tend to add more value than manual ones. The choice of gate material also plays a role in both aesthetic appeal and security. Beyond driveways, side gates can improve accessibility to your rear yard, making the outdoor space more usable. Overall, whether for security, safety, or aesthetics, installing a gate is a valuable addition to a property.
