Impervious or vitreous tile and vinyl flooring work best for the kitchen. These surfaces are non-porous (or have a very low porosity) that can stand up against spills, splashes, and plumbing leaks. You can also use mild dish soap diluted with warm water or a degreaser (such as Simple Green or Goof Off) diluted with warm water. Some soap-based cleaners can leave a haze. If you notice this, further dilute the mixture with water or use a different detergent that does not leave a film. You should never use harsh cleaning chemicals, any type of acidic compound (such as vinegar or citrus-based cleansers), or harsh scrubbers like steel wool or hard bristle brushes.

Because carpet tiles are designed to adhere to the subfloor directly, it’s usually not a good idea to install padding under them. Some carpet tiles come with padding attached to the tile if you prefer a cushier walking experience. In some cases, you can use a compact underlayment beneath your tiles, but you would likely need help from a pro to accomplish this type of installation.
