"The owner Gary M. was great to work with...called him and he was at my house the next day. No pressure, just fair and honest. You can tell within a few minutes if you are going like a saleman's tactics as I had 5 prices from the big window companies. His prices were a lot less than the big companies and I got a better window. About 8 weeks later the installers were at my house...installation is just as important as the quality of the windows and these three guys were a well-oiled machine...meticulous and detailed. The one installer said he has been installing windows for Home Exteriors for 31 years, which made me fell at ease. That was the summer of 2018...now 2 years later we still love our windows and would recommend you get a price from Home Exteriors...it will be worth a call."

"I purchased a house with this system installed. There was a small section that had not been able to be installed initially and small amount of water was coming in during heavy rains. A tech came out and identified that we just needed to remove a section of an old bar and they could complete the installation - free of charge. Very happy with both techs I worked with."

Windows questions, answered by experts

The most common types of window frames include frame and sash, metal or aluminum frames, composite frames, fiberglass frames, vinyl frames, wood frames, glass or glazed frames, and insulated frames. Frames can also be categorized by operating types, such as awning frames, single/double-sliding frames, fixed frames, casement frames, and single/double-hung frames.

Consider energy performance ratings, durability, aesthetics, and ease of maintenance when selecting windows for different environments.

There are many signs to look out for that tell you it’s time to replace a double-hung window. If the window is drafty and inefficient, you may need a new window to block out air leaks and keep your utility bills from skyrocketing. Other signs that it’s time to replace a window include foggy glass, soft or broken window frames, or window sashes that won’t open or close easily.

Use a high-quality caulk with silicone around your windows, as it’s waterproof and shrink-proof. Or, you can use a caulk consisting of polyurethane or acrylic if you want to be able to paint over it. Caulk made from silicone is not paintable. Avoid using inexpensive caulk that has a resin or oil base. These caulks will not last long and may shrink and pull away from the window as temperatures go up and down.

Yes, it is generally better and more cost-effective to replace all your windows at once. Contractors often lower the per-window labor and material costs for larger projects, saving you money in the long run. Installers may also quote a flat rate for overhead, making multiple small jobs more expensive than one large one.

Replacing all windows simultaneously offers other advantages:

  • Aesthetics and Home Value: It creates a cohesive style and uniform energy efficiency, which is appealing to potential home buyers.

  • Efficiency: The entire replacement process, which can take several weeks, is completed in a single, more efficient project.

However, replacing all windows requires a significant upfront investment. While you can replace just a few windows, experts recommend replacing at least five to eight at a time to avoid high overhead costs. An exception is when a single window is damaged; in that case, it can be replaced on its own.
