"Albert did an excellent job repairing our ceiling which had water damage from leak in our air conditioning. He arrived 2 days to complete the plaster job . We are pleased with ceiling which had a pattern. Can't tell any difference in the pattern that he repaired. Would recommend Albert for any plastering or drywall job."

Small jobs welcome

"Very professional! Work was done over 5 days and workers showed up and on time! I appreciated especially the workmanship and the attention to detail that was exhibited! There was no surprise to me that they were booked up! I would most definitely consider Ceilings by Simpson again if the situation warrants."

"He removed the outdated popcorn ceiling in 3 bedrooms and 1 bathroom. If youâ ve never had this done, very messy. Took care in covering everything up to protect the walls and carpet. Did an outstanding job in removal and skim coating each room to a smooth finish. Communicated well throughout the project and very professional. Awesome !"

"We were able to come to terms on 3 bathroom painting projects.   Overall Dave is very responsive and punctual.  He definitely shows up when he says he will and that goes a long way.  Finish on paint is ok, but not the best.   I think that his dry wall work is very good and prep is pretty good.   Overall contractor I would give a good rating or a B.  Definitely not as bad as some of the contractors we have utilized so maybe with the market so busy he would be acceptable and does decent work for the price.   He definitely finishes his projects as well.   Overall B experience."

"From start to finish, Jacob and his team FAR exceeded our expectations. Stellar customer service, competitive pricing, they arrived on time, took great care to protect our flooring and clean up all debris, they worked hard the entire time they were here, and provided clear explanations and answered all our questions. We'd gotten estimates from two other companies but when it came down to it, the customer service and attention to detail made Jacob the clear choice for us. We will stay with his company for our annual maintenance and would highly recommend him to anyone needing fireplace and chimney repair. Also, if you've been thinking about having your fireplace and chimney inspected, do it sooner, rather than later. In our case, the inspection revealed issues that needed immediate attention and it wouldn't have been safe to have even one more fire in the fireplace without replacing the liner and completing the necessary repairs. And none of the issues were visible to us until we saw the camera footage from the inspection."

Popcorn Ceilings questions, answered by experts

No, not all popcorn ceilings have asbestos, but a vast majority do. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) banned its use in 1973, although it still may have been used up through the early ‘90s. But, in general, homes built or remodeled before the early ‘80s likely utilized materials with asbestos. That being said, a professional test is the only way to determine for sure.

Yes, you can cover a popcorn ceiling, which is often more cost-effective and easier than scraping it off. Common methods include using ceiling-grade drywall, applying a skim coat, or installing beadboard panels to create a smooth, updated finish. Covering the ceiling can also protect you from asbestos exposure if the material contains it. However, it's important to note that this method only seals off the asbestos and does not eliminate it, which could be a concern for future renovations or home resale. If you suspect your ceiling contains asbestos, it's best to hire a local asbestos abatement company to test the material and manage its safe removal.

How long it takes to repair a ceiling depends on the extent of the damage. Patching a small hole might only take a few minutes, while repairing a water-damaged section of the ceiling could take hours. If there are structural issues, expect your ceiling repair to take several days or longer.

Popcorn ceilings have fallen out of popularity for several reasons, though opinions on them can vary. The primary drawbacks include an outdated appearance, difficulty with cleaning and maintenance, and potential health risks, as ceilings installed before the 1990s may contain asbestos. As design trends have shifted toward sleeker, more modern finishes, many homeowners now prefer smooth ceilings for their clean look and easier upkeep. However, popcorn ceilings do offer some benefits, such as excellent acoustic properties for noise reduction and the ability to hide imperfections. Some also appreciate their retro charm or find them to be a cost-effective solution. Ultimately, whether they are "bad" depends on personal preference, safety concerns, and aesthetic goals.

The easiest way to remove texture from walls is the soak-and-scrape method. You’ll need to spray a section of the wall with water and let the water soak in and soften the texture. Then, you need to scrape the texture off using a drywall taping knife. This method works best with unpainted walls since paint prevents water from saturating the textured joint compound.
