"We feel that the cleaning aspect of this professional was top notch. There were informational issues that were not as top drawer. When I spoke with Carl to initiate service we discussed that our home had no basement at all. We have a crawl space. We talked at length about crawl spaces. When the tech came to do the work, the work order had basement recorded and the tech was clearly frustrated when he was informed we have a crawl space. I was also quoted a price that included our dryer vent. This was not reflected on the work order and the tech stated he was not doing the dryer vent. When he was informed that the dryer vent WAS included on our quote he said he would not do it without calling the office. He ultimately did it but it’s a bit offensive when someone challenges your word when the information he had was clearly errant anyway. I was not at home during the cleaning but my son and my partner were and they report that the tech was very thorough and did an excellent job cleaning our air ducts and dryer vent. Thank you for doing work that we cannot do ourselves any longer. Keep up the good work!!"

Hauling questions, answered by experts

Roughing in and connecting utilities are the hardest parts of finishing a basement, and they’re the parts we typically don’t recommend doing as a DIY project. Unfortunately, your finishing timeline can be extended by weeks while you wait for contractors and inspectors to install electrical wiring, plumbing lines, and heating/cooling equipment and carry out inspections.

Professionals safely remove water or fuel tanks by emptying the contents, cutting and disconnecting lines, and lifting the tank for disposal while adhering to environmental regulations.

Most cement companies will haul away old concrete from your property, but they typically charge extra for the service. Expect to pay as low as $250 for haul-away services or an average of $1,100 to demolish and haul away a concrete landscaping feature. You should also confirm with your company that you want these added services, as they’ll need to bring additional equipment and machinery to dismantle the concrete and relocate it to a disposal site. It’s a good idea to have the concrete company handling the new concrete project do this work to save some money.

A basic move-out cleaning service typically includes:

  • Dusting

  • Mopping

  • Vacuuming

  • Wiping down surfaces

However, if your home could use a little more cleaning than the basics, you can optionally add on services, like grout cleaning, carpet shampooing, and window washing.

While tipping junk haulers is not required or expected, it is a greatly appreciated gesture for a job well done. Many junk removal companies state that tips are welcome but not mandatory. A good rule of thumb is to tip between 10% and 20% of the total bill, or a flat amount of $10 to $20 per worker. For exceptional service, a tip of $20 to $50 for the entire crew is also appropriate. It is often best to give cash directly to each worker at the end of the job.

Consider tipping if the crew:

  • Goes above and beyond your expectations.

  • Handles heavy, bulky items or navigates difficult spaces like tight hallways or stairs.

  • Works in inclement weather or deals with potentially hazardous materials.

  • Takes extra care to protect your home and property.

  • Accommodates a last-minute scheduling change.
