"He really knew his stuff! There was a lot to do because bad work had to be removed before the good stuff could be installed. But, he put a new deadbolt on that works like a dream. I had some other people there preparing for some other work to be done, so I lost track of time, but I think he spent way over two (2) hours making sure the lock had a smooth opening and that I didn't have to use a Karate kick to get it to work. I will call him again for any other locksmith work I need. He's the best!"

"This is the second time we have replaced this particular lockset.  Joyce adjusted the door so that it now opens more easily and is much easier to lock.  She was extremely professional and gave us a few tips on how to ensure that this lockset lasts.  Overall we would rate her as one of the best Angie's List people we have dealt with.

"Alex of Accurate Locksmith did a great job. He showed up on time, assessed the situation and make suggestions to improve the work. He then worked diligently on the jobs. Alex explained what he was doing when needed and sought approval before implementing changes. It was a pleasure to work with such a professional. I highly recommend Alex of Accurate Locksmith for your door lock and maintenance needs."

Locksmiths questions, answered by experts

Locksmiths recommend changing your locks once every seven years for the best security at your home. Locks can wear out over time, so you should inspect your locks regularly. A higher grade lock provides you with more cycles than those with a lower grade.

Expect to pay between $50 to $200 if you hire a locksmith to change your locks. That figure includes labor and the cost of basic hardware. The cost will naturally be higher if you plan to install more expensive locks, like smart locks, and if you need a lot of them.

Homeowners can save money by replacing locks themselves. A typical rekeying kit costs about $10 to $25. The only additional cost is purchasing new house keys, and those are no more than a few dollars per key. If you want to replace the locks on your own completely, the main cost is the price of the locks themselves. A standard knob-style lock starts around $25, while electronic locks and smart locks will run in the hundreds of dollars. The only additional tools you should need are a tape measure, screwdriver, and screws if they are not already provided.

Most door knobs can be removed with a Phillips or flathead screwdriver. If you don’t have either of those available, a paper clip or small pin can sometimes work, but the extra effort may not be worth a quick trip to the hardware store.

Yes, you should always change your locks after buying a house. Do so as soon as possible after you move in. Otherwise, you won’t know who has working keys to the property, whether they’re spare keys or otherwise. If an intruder gains access to your house with a key, it may not be covered under your homeowners insurance.

Yes, as long as it’s thick enough for the deadbolt. Most interior hollow core doors are at least 1 1/2-inches thick, which is usually the minimum requirement for a deadbolt. You’ll want to find the lock block first before installing. Also, most hollow doors require additional reinforcement for locks, such as a reinforcement plate or plywood block.
