"If I could rate this company 10 ⭐️’s I would. I called Kris on short notice to redo a big drywall job that another contractor botched. He promptly called me back and arranged to fix it ASAP. What really impressed me was Kris’s work ethic (him & his crew worked Labor Day!- unheard of!) and attention to detail. It looks beautiful! Also; they meticulously cleaned up after themselves and were very professional and friendly. I will be calling Kris for future projects as they are the best!!!!!!"

"This was the first time using a contractor through Home Advisor. I usually seek out service providers through word of mouth or BBB. My experience with CBaxter Masonry has been exceptional. I needed a landscape retaining wall straightened in several sections. When they quoted me my job, I had several other priority items to deal with. CBaxter was very patient with me and answered all my questions even though I wasn't ready to move forward on my retaining wall project. When I was finally ready to tackle the retaining wall, they promptly put me on the schedule and actually came out to do the work on the day they promised. They tore down my retaining wall and rebuilt it. They were very fast, efficient and left the work site undisturbed. If you didn't know I had my retaining wall redone, you wouldn't have known they came and did the work. They even re-spread the mulch that was moved back. I am truly impressed and will use them again for any of my masonry work. They were a bit expensive compared to the other bids, but it was worth for the work and quality I got. Furthermore, they did a better job than the landscaper who originally put the retaining wall in."

"Our stone pillar was destroyed and we struggled getting help to repair. Ronnie passes by our house frequently from job to job. He couldnt bare to see the damage so he stopped and insisted that he be given an opportunity to fix the damage. A true professional is someone who cares deeply about their work, so deeply that they could not bare to sit by and watch poor quality tarnish the reputation of the profession in its entirety. Ronnie is a true professional and i would definitely hire him for all my masonry needs."

Wall Repair questions, answered by experts

Failure to compact the soil during construction is the most common cause of leaning retaining walls. In addition, poor drainage can lead to excessive water pressure behind a retaining wall, pushing against it until it begins to move forward away from the soil it is holding back.

Generally, a railroad tie retaining wall consisting of a single line of ties should be between 3 and 4 feet tall—and the height often tops out at around 6 feet. You can go taller, but you may need additional footings and reinforcements, including a second layer of railroad ties to support the added weight of the soil it’s holding back.

Most railroad tie retaining walls have a life span of 20 to 30 years, though you may need to replace your wall sooner if it’s repeatedly exposed to heavy rain, runoff, and excess moisture. Railroad ties are typically treated with creosote, which makes them much more durable than untreated wood. Though they last longer, they don’t last forever. For the most longevity, make sure your retaining wall has a sturdy base and steel reinforcements. You should also install drainage to direct water away from the wall.

Small retaining walls still require a foundation of some kind, typically a concrete footing. This helps to ensure the wall is structurally sound and prevents the ground from shifting over time, especially during those winter freeze/thaw cycles. The footing helps spread the weight of the wall and the load it carries over a larger area of the ground, thus assisting with stability. This is true of small retaining walls, larger rock garden walls, and the like.

Costs depend on material type, labor rates, and additional features like decorative finishes or reinforcement.
