"Eldi has now completed two different projects at my home. A large, stone paver project around a pool and a landscape stone wall across my front yard. They were very responsive to our messages and arrived at the agreed time. Pricing was fair as well. Work looks great. I will definitely hire again"

"We LOVE our new awning!!!! Have used it eveyday since it was installed. Bob, the owner was wonderful ! Jake and Shawn did the install and were hardworking and pleasant to work with. The awning was ordered in early May but took a while due to supply shortages. Bob was in touch with the company several times for updates for us. The awning was installed on a Sat. the day after they received it. Would definitely recommend Champs. Will enjoy for years to come!"

"We had a great experience getting our patio done. Nate was communicative throughout the entire project, always keeping us informed on progress and any issues they encountered along the way. He also made a point to stop by in person to review everything and talk things through, which we really appreciated. Their availability was very flexible, making the whole process easy to coordinate. Most importantly, the final result is absolutely beautiful! We are so happy with how it turned out and look forward to spending time on it this summer!"

"Scott was extremely knowledgeable and personable, very easy to work with and responded quickly to all of our questions during the install. We are beyond happy with the work he and his crew did for our backyard patio and fire pit. Scott has a knack for custom designs and completely blew us away with his vision for our space. Highly recommend if you're looking for something beyond a cookie cutter patio."

Customers say: Quick response

"Benjamin recently completed a major home renovation project for me. The project required a variety of types of work such as preparing and painting the complete interior of the house, relocating electrical outlets, hanging a medicine cabinet and a framed vanity mirror, installing vanity bar lights, removing and painting French doors, reinsulating around those doors, and a number of small patching and painting of holes, etc.. Benjamin has the unique ability to foresee potential problems and to make recommendations for their solution before they become major issues. He has an extremely high standard of quality and takes great pride in his work. I would readily recommend Austin Acres Property Management to anyone looking for a craftsman who goes to great lengths do a job with excellence and who will go out of his way to please his customer. Thanks to Benjamin and his helpers, our newly purchased house is well on its way to becoming a much more pleasant place in which to live. Thank you Benjamin."

Masonry questions, answered by experts

It’s called cobblestone because it’s made of stones that are “cobbed” together. A cob is a term that refers to rounded lumps. Originally, cobblestone streets were made from pebbles and stones gathered from riverbeds that had been rounded over time by the passage of water. The term has nothing to do with a cobbler, which is the term for someone who makes and fixes shoes.

Stone houses used to be much more practical, but with the advent of stronger and cheaper materials like concrete, they aren’t seen as much anymore. There are some parts of the world where it makes sense to build with stone, and they are usually next to a stone quarry. Stone is, however, very weather-resistant, which is why many homes near the sea and on mountains are still built with local stone.

Unfortunately, there are many disadvantages to stone houses. They are slow to build and the materials are pricey, both of which balloon the total cost. Stone walls require a more robust foundation, which costs more to install. Running plumbing, electrical, and HVAC through a stone house is much more difficult too, so homeowners need to seriously consider if the aesthetic benefit is worth the cost of building with stone. One of the questions to ask a masonry contractor is if a similar aesthetic can be achieved with another material.

It is possible, albeit a lot slower, to break up a rock using water. You would do this by freezing and thawing the water. You could create some initial holes or cracks in the rock, then pour water into the cracks or holes and allow them to freeze (so it's best to do this in winter or in colder climates). Since water expands when it freezes, this puts pressure on the inside of the rock and causes it to crack. You could continue to pour more water in and let it freeze to continue to break up the rock.

Chimney mortar typically lasts 20 to 30 years, depending on its quality, local weather conditions, and maintenance. Over time, exposure to moisture, freezing, and thawing cycles can cause mortar to deteriorate, leading to cracks and gaps. Regular inspections and timely repairs, such as repointing or tuckpointing, can extend the lifespan of chimney mortar by ensuring the structure's integrity.
